Will this get me blackballed? - 5/19/2004 1:05:23
I have been working when I have time on reworking over my site in its entirety. However, I am behind and know that it will be a while yet before the site has completely gone thru a makeover. My intentions are to pull the entire old site and load it with the entire new site when I finally finish it.
Now, I got a great idea. But before I proceed, I need some expert advice. Here is my idea. I have a 2nd domain name that I use to point to the one that I am talking about. What if I tell my ISP to let the domain name to stand on it own? I can load what I have done to that name. Then as I get time I can continue building on the site.
Now, here is my question. Would search engines working with the spiders, robots and an occasional human see the new site and see how it relates to the other and consider it spanning or otherwise breaking the rules. I am going to have to point from the new to the old for what I have not redone and etc. I certainly don't want to get my self permanently erased for page ranking, etc. What do you experts think?

If you have a page with similar words, I suggest you change every couple of words of text. This will make it look like the content is not the same.
You may be penalized for double contect pages, however it does not happen often. Mainly SEs do this to make sure people do not make a replica of another site's content in order to generate their traffic.

I sell a product with a lot of pictures. The new site will have richer text content to go along with the pictures. This will mean that a lot of pictures will be the same and then there will be more new pages with new text and picture content. I need to give my customers ideas and to show them with words and pictures ideas so they can put together what they want. There fore the same words are used very often. The old site that is still up does not have rich text content. The pages will have the same titles.
It sure would make it easier on me to be able to load my new site and continue on it as I find the time. With all that I read regarding how google and others are going after misuse of trying to get your site ranked, I somehow feel that since I have to list the name of the first site, telephone, addresses, and a lot of other information would be the same that they would be leery that I am spanning.
I have read about others who have been blackballed. It is my understanding that once this happens to you that it is almost impossible for the search engine to allow you back on board anymore. Does any one else practice this procedure of using two domain names with out one get the other or both blackballed?

I opened a 2nd site in order to get better placement in Yellow Page locally - (business name started with W - new one with A - lol) anyway, i referenced it as a subsidiary business so its not the same. Which of the 2 domain names is better for you long term? Also, what is your long term plan - having 2 domain names or converting to the second?
No one knows for sure what Google will do but from what I have read, I dont think you will have a problem. Their target on this practice was sites that would purchase 100's of new domain names and point them all to the main site- I think you are a little fish that will go uncaught but in case you do get caught, this message will self destruct.

I don't really understand your situation... Are you running 2 different domains, pointing to the same content? Or, are you pointing 2 different domains to 2 different web sites, but they are the same?
If the former:
No big dead. I have dozens of domian names pointing to a single site.
If the latter:
I keep hearing the figure 15%. Keep your pages at least 15% different to avoid any duplicate content filters.

Nah... I have done this, but instead of a decent sounding reason like yours - I was gaming the SE's. I held 7 of the top 10 spots (including 1 thru 5) for a long time. It was *almost * embarrassing. Eventually, I was nailed with a PR0. I changed one of the sites, waited a couple of weeks and both were back. Although, I have heard of sites getting grey-bared --- banned. From that, there is almost no coming back.

Here is the situation regarding the two domains. I built this site a little over 3 years ago. Content has been increased thru that time and many changes have taken place. But it is still the same old site. The site is now getting hard to wander thru. Also, my learning curve has greatly increased and I can make the new site so much better.
The guy that I work for had bought a domain name way before I met him. The domain name is his business name and does not relate to what he does. This domain name was not with a reliable web person and just got lost out there. The domain name that I chose for him deals with what he does so it works out really great in its own right for web searches. I went after his original domain name which is his business name and had my ISP point it to the one that we use. It is his business name domain name that I wanted to use to build the new site.
If a car lot sold fords they might point you to the ford site. In my case I am like the car lot but do all of my own ford words and pictures. Now I want to use my ford site to build my new car lot site for my fords. Make sense? This way I can have both up and running and can continue to work on the new site as I can find the time. In the meantime when I have a customer that ask the right question, I can direct him to the new site where the answer lies. This means that I will have to direct both sites back and forth to one another in many pages of the site. For instance my new site will not have information on Explorers till I have time to get it up. And on the working old site, I might have a lot of new information and pictures of Aerostars. Confusing?
Also, because I have learned a lot in the last 3 years, the new site that I am working on is intense with everything that search engines are looking for in regards to an increase in page ranking. This is again one of the main reasons for the creation of the new site. My rankings with the old site are also very good. And all of you know how much time and trouble that you put in for great rankings. This is another reason that I want to feel comfortable if I decide to use that other domain name. I don't want to tear up what has take time to create.

Are your domain names pointing to the same host, or are they pointing to 2 different host accounts?

Yes, both domain names are hosted by the same ISP. Yes, I have both names listed on my account with the ISP. Ownership of both domain names is with the person that I work for.
The domain name that uses his business name is being used because he bought it quite a few years ago. A few repeat customers would know him by that name. At the owners request I rescued the domain name. Then I set it up to point at the main domain name.
They will go after me if I use it to build the new site with won't they?
