...well, not really, especially if I need layering. BUT...if found this wonderful software, PhotoFiltre:

http://www.photofiltre.com/

You can apply a vast array of filters with it. It is straight forward and very intuitive, easy and fun to learn and use.

PhotoFiltre has versions in English, Czech, French and language files for Portuguese, German, Dutch, Czech, Italian, English

There are numerous free, predefine plug-in modules that you can download: Selections and Patterns, as well as masks and thumbnails for the PhotoMasque module.

I haven't had this much fun photo editing in a long time. I've been playing: http://www.digicamhelp.com/photofiltre/index.htm

Found out about it in another forum.

Oh, did I mention it was FREE!

PSP = "loads of money" ??
Either you are shopping in the wrong place
or you don't know what the competition costs
(Photoshop---eeeoouuch).
Anyone use PixiaPIXIA ART
Does layers etc.
For PSP try Ebay and get last edition = save$$$

Pretty sure that is what I said:
(Photoshop--- eeeooouch)
About 4-5 times more I think,
Maybe worse than that.

While I have Photoshop, I mostly use PhotoImpact from Ulead (http://www.ulead.com).

I like the user interface, working with layers is no problem, and it cost less.

I'm surprised PhotoImpact doesn’t get more press.

Has anyone tried PhotoFilter. I'd be interested in what you think. I love the filters and matting and framing capabilities.

I agree Bruce,
I think PhotoImpact is underrated.
I really enjoy it's interface.

Gail, at the other end of the scale costwise, have you tried Nik Color Efex Pro ? I just downloaded the classic/pro combo at someone's recommendation, and the demo looks very impressive. Now I just have to justify the cost to myself...

Nik Multimedia Inc

BTW, came across your great site the other day - most impressive.

Well heck. I usually push PhotoImpact but decided to hold back this time. Now I notice there are at least two other users here.

I guess the answer to the question is: Because, if it doesn't cost that much it can't be any good. And Ulead makes some other excellent products too. BTW PhotoImpact has some excellent java scripting facilities.

As you say, Ulead has other excellent products. SmartSaver Pro is one of my standard tools for web optimisation.

Gail

I shall be the odd one out:)

It looks promising from my five minute mess around, shame about the lack of layers to work with tho. It has potential

Hm.. I don't use Photostop or Paint Shop Pro. Tried Pixia, too. No one has never heard of the "Photoshop without the $700 badge"? Download it at http://www.gimp.org/downloads/. Sorry if I advertise but, heh, haven't you even heard of this one?? :):)

Well - I'll buck the trend.

Photoshop is superb. If you don't want to spend a lot Photoshop Elements is a fraction of the price yet still a very powerful image editor and often comes free with scanners or digital cameras.

PaintshopPro can be had for about £50UK and does most of what Photoshop does. It must be one of the best value for money products out there.

With all of them you need to take some time to learn to be able to reap the rewards.

I use Corel Photopaint. IMHO it's better than Photoshop, to me it's easier to use - more intuitive- and so far I have found it does everything I can do in photoshop but quicker. Also it works well with coreldraw.

IMO fireworks is the best app for web graphics, followed by Photoshop. PSP is a very good package for the money.

I'm also a fireworks fan. I use fireworks for most of my webgraphics but photoshop still leads the way for photos.

in your opinion, what makes it superior to fireworks, psp and photoshop?

Uhm... That's a tough question.

Features. The gradient editor is very cool. GIMPressionist, too. It also has many cool toy plugins like Flame and dozens of ways to create fractals. Animation package. Auto-create cool logo texts. And more filters than in Photoshop I use as a secondary image editor. Scripts that automate certain processes.

And of course the fact that I'm already so accustomed to using it, I find it hard to use any other image editor :).

At least my workmate tried The GIMP at work and liked it very much. On the other hand, my father simply hated it. He said it's a really really bad program :).

But it also lacks in many features. Most of the plugins are created by individual users and for example simple Blur filter doesn't even have a preview in it :). And it's primarily for Linux, the Windows version is just a port... a DOS prompt keeps popping up which some people find very distracting (I don't, I just minimize it).

It's free for download so anyone can try it. If you don't like it, of course you don't have to use it. I do. But I'm afraid it's only about opinions.

Thanks for asking.

Regards,
Bamse

and thanks for sharing.
for any of these programs, there is a great factor of which we first learned on and are comfortable with..changing usually involves a new learning curve.
and nothing wrong with factoring cost into it..haha..that is certainly why i first chose psp and i havent been motivated to change because it does the jobs i need.

I first started out on psp, and then moved to photoshop, and never looked back. Photoshop does take awhile to get use to. If you still have photoshop give it another chance, layers can be life savers :)

I've used Photoshop whole my life, and can say that The GIMP is not a Photoshop killer. But it still has some very cool features you can't live without.

You can look at, for example, my gallery at deviantART. Everything you see except the drop background in "GeoOrange" has been made with The GIMP (by me). They're mostly just made using these "cool features".

And oh, The GIMP has layers.

I tried installing photoshop here before, since it's what I use at university, but some some reason it didn't work. I've been using GIMP and CorelPhotoPaint for ages now, and I don't really miss photoshop.
