Cut out image - 5/26/2004 16:08:57
Does any one know how to cut out an image (within a jpg) and paste it onto a transparent background?

What editor are you using? Somewhere along the line the .jpg part is going to have to end up as .gif though (AFAIK).
In PSP for example I would just cut out the part I wanted, paste it into a new canvas and save it as a .gif.

PNG supports transparency too... but GIF will work.

Like Mike said, copy the part of the JPEG you want, paste into a new image, and export as a transparent GIF image.

Ah but what if it's an irregular shape he wants to cut out?

You need to use a thing that looks like a lasso. Click on points all the way round what you want to cut out.

Then do as above.

I assumed it was.:)

In Image Composer I can't find a lasso tool.:)

I have to cut using the polygon tool under that scissor thingee...:):)

Both PSP and Fireworks have a lasso thingy and it's not underneath the scissor thingy. :)

It all depends on the background, if it is a straight forward color, I might leave the image as a jpg and place the cut out on top of that color & then save it as a jpg (not a gif)....... or go the other way like above.

Good Lord bobby, I haven't gotten all the others figured out yet.:) I've got that "other" system running all the time but never seem to have the time to really get to it properly.:):)

Sounds like a perfect time to learn one, might as well be a free-bee

I've been using Gimp 2.0 at work for a month and it's great. Not quite Photoshop, but it's a giant leap over IC

if you were using fireworks it's a lot easier to draw a path with the pen tool (you can back and tweeak it after) and group it as a mask with the jpeg, then simply drag that onto the new background.

also depending on the kind of shape it might also be easier to draw a path in PS with the pen tool and use that as a selection

i'm using Photoshop 6 - lasso tool works ok but takes hours to do it neatly - isn't there a "magic button" that finds edges?

Photoshop 7 has an "extract" tool. Works well on fine detail. Check if 6.0 has it. You'll need to follow step-by-step the PS Help files if you do.

So does CS, for those of you rich enough to be able to afford it. I just bought it off of eBay, thinking I was getting 7. Go Figure

you can use the pen tool in PS6 and then tweak it afterwards. zooming in hleps as well, and after you can convert it to a selection, check your help files, (F1) for tips on the pen tool. if you're still having trouble then post a copy of the image for help

Another method that is available in most graphic programs is to do an "export", select ".gif" as the type and then use the transparency tool to select the colors you want to "remove" from the graphic and make transparent. Works well if there are particular colors you want to remove and keep. Usually, when you "export as a gif", there are two ways you could remove particular colors -- by clicking colors on the thumbnail of the graphic that is shown or (usually) on the left in the color pallet.

:)

Hope it helps!

Also, I've found, that if you remove colors around a graphic and make them transparent....and then put the graphic on a particular background color, the graphic may have a halo around it that makes it look like it has an outline that you don't want. To remedy, I usually set my background color of the graphic to the background color I'm goning to put it on in my html page.....that way, when you remove the stuff you don't want, if there's a few pixels it doesn't get, you don't really see it.

Hope I explained that right!

:) Good Luck!

Without seeing your image It's hard to make the best recommendation but you could try:

Magic wand tool - select the areas outside the part you want to keep. Holding down the shift key will add to the selection you just made. Adjusting the tolerance can help too making the selection finer.

When you have your selection go to the main menu - SELECT/INVERSE (CTRL I)
EDIT/COPY (CTRL C)
FILE/NEW (CTRL N)
From the window that opens select Transparent - the size should default automatically for you.
In the new window EDIT/PASTE (CTRL V)

Zoom in and tidy up the image with the eraser - use a small brush.
