Guest -> ftp question (3/14/2001 16:10:00)

If a site is published with FP, is it ok to ftp individual pages to update them? The reason is that a number of people need to update pages when they're away from the office. They take a copy of the file, make their changes, then ftp. But I'm redesigning the website, and would like to use some simple FP forms, so I'd have to publish the site on a server with FP extensions, right?.

Thanks!

dh

When publishing a web using FP you always need to make sure that the server uses FP extensions, and has them configured properly. FTP is no problem tho. I've used it a couple times with an FP web.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind using the scenario you're talking about.

First, in order to utilize certain aspects of FP such as forms, you must publish to a server with properly configured FP extensions just as Bobby mentioned. They simply won't work otherwise, so make certain of those extensions.

Second, although it is entirely possible to let other people upload files via FTP to a FP web, it is not recommended as the simple process of logging in and transferring via FTP can corrupt or otherwise disable some or all of the FP extensions. Bobby claims to have used FTP on FP sites in the past with no problems, and quite frankly, so have I. Many times. Just be forewarned, the practice is not considered "safe".
