Corrine -> from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/27/2004 21:12:03)

[X(

I have went from dial-up to dsl, from windows 98 to windows xp home edition. I just reinstalled my Frontpage 2000 program, I have a domain name, web site, that I cannot import. When I try it says: "The server sent a response which frontpage can not parse. If you are trying to connect to a frontpage server, check with the servers administrator to make sure the frontpage extensions are installed properly."

However, I have imported this site a few times before with no problems. Currently I am uploading to the same company, everything is the same as every other time I have done this, except now it wont work. WOuld it have anything to do with the fact I have switched from dial-up to DSL? Also publish web will not highlight, even if I say edit with Frontpage when I am using explorer, and save the page and reselect it for publishing it weill not work. My website address is on tv and needs updating frequently, I cannot import the site or edit. I need help ASAP PLEASE!

What are the current steps you are taking to "Publish" the web to your local PC ?

ellipisces -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/27/2004 23:11:15)

Have you tried;

FrontPage Live
There are two ways to work in FrontPage. I’m on version 2000…

1. Working on a “disk based web”. This means that you are working from your hard drive. Once the web is ready to be launched, you Publish. To Publish a web, press the fourth button over from the left (the one with the flying pages) Watch the next procedure carefully. It should say “http://yourwebname.co..", not ftp://. If you have to use FTP, then the extensions are not installed or not working .

2. Working on a “server-based web”. This means that you have a direct connection to a web server that has the FrontPage extensions set-up for your web. This is what people are talking about when they say editing the web “live”. Changes to the web take effect immediately upon saving.

To work on a web “live”. Go to File—Open Web… In the dialog box near the bottom is the line that says “Folder name: ” type your URL here, like this; http://www.nnnnnn.com, where nnnnn is your domain name. If the extensions are working then you get asked for user name and password...

Some key points
It is vastly easier to set up forms using the server based web. This includes the search, discussion, and guestbook components

It has been stated that the site will be slower while you author against the server (server based). I doubt that any testing has been done regarding the speed of the site while someone is authoring against the server (server based), compared to the speed while the site is being published (disk based)

If you only author against the server you will have to ensure that your local (disk based) site is in sync, and to date, that has to be done manually. This can be achieved by publishing from the server to your PC (publish backwards)

In Frontpage I am going to file, new web, and then import web wizard, when I type the name of my website it will not import and that is when I get the message , the server sent a response to frontpage and can not parse, check w/ the server administrator and so on.....=\ I have imported this web a few times before and had no problems. I am taking the same steps and getting different results. I have downloaded a new anti-virus program recently, and just reinstalled Frontpage. I am using the same place to upload I have used for a few years. I cannot import, my publish web under file is not highlighted nor the icon in Frontpage. One other change I amde recently was upgrading from dial-up to DSL, could some of my setting be wrong, maybe the comp isnt recognizing my connection to the internet thus it will not give the option to impoirt or highlight the publish web option.???????

Thanks for replying so quickly, Corrine [:(]

Also, before, I would import the site, and then when I wanted to work on it just open web, put in my name and password, it would load all my files and pages in the side bar, say I made a change to the default page then I would just click file save, or preview in browser with the automatically save box ticked, and walllaa, it was updated...

This sounds like you are editing live. Maybe if we just tried to clarify things a little... Let's leave out Import for now, some people have reported problems with it, (although I still never have any???)

  • Start up Frontpage
  • Open your site by going to File --> Open Web -->
  • Click on Web Folders on the bottom of the leftmost pane
  • If your site is listed double-click it, if not, type the full URL in the folder name box. If it comes up with an error about no server, put a slash at the end of the URL
  • You should get the Login box, enter name and password
  • Do you see files and folders in the left or middle pane?

if all has gone well, you should be able to change pages, press the save button, just like before...

Alrighty, I did exactly that, the username/password promt came up, it still had my info saved, I clicked ok and a new message appears, says: the folder http://www.tabernacletypology.com isnt accesible. This folder may be located on an unavailable volume or password protected. (??????? grrr, smile) also says check c:\document~barker~1\locals~1\temp\wecerr.txt . Oh man [:@]

ellipisces -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 0:39:00)

Ok, try...

Open the page in internet explorer, just like as if you were websurfing

Hopefully you have the button on the right that says, "Open in Frontpage"

see what that does

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 0:40:50)

ALso I remember when I had 98 windows I would go to a place where I could add a new web folder, XP is different I cannot find the same option??

ellipisces -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 0:42:17)

appears to be a web folder issue

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287399&Product=fp2000

let me see if I can find any more info

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 0:45:32)

Did that to, I selected edit with frontpage, the page would show up where I could edit it but will not publish "upload" and it doesnt ask me for a password or anything. Also,it says I am saving the url to my documents on C:/documents and settings/mycomp/my documents/my webs/default.htm ........not uploading to tabernacletypology.com ( my website)

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 0:56:25)

I went to the site addy you sent and follwed these instructions:
On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type the following:
frontpg.exe http://www.xxxxxxxx.com

My default page loaded into frontpage after I entered ,y password ect...however it is still trying to save to my c:\documents and setting ...................how do I create a new web folder with XP...in 98 I didnt create the web folder through frontpage I did it through like add new web folder...or something...sorry for being so confusing, =( and thank you so much for your help..

ellipisces -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 0:59:12)

What shows up in your web folders when you start up Frontpage?

perhaps the location is stuck. Try save as instead of save and then make sure the web location is showing up in the "Save in" box

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 1:09:51)

FIle , open web....= blank box, there is nothing in there....when I put file, open, and the box comes up, it has the page I saved in there and named default....an though I can open it up and change it, it is still saving to my comp, not uploading to where I would normally publish...

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 1:12:34)

and where my saved pages and files, would normally be in the side bar along side where you edit in Frontpage, there is nothing, obviously I guess because I have not imported my stuff from the server that I upload to...this is craziness I tell ya, smile, trying to keep a smile on my face lol.

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 1:17:16)

I am trying to import my web site so I can edit it and then be able to make changes and then publish. I am hoping if I install the newest frontpage version, it will magically cure what ale's me..smile. Ya think..???? They say it has alot less bugs and quirks, I am hoping it does.....

Pulling my hair out in Washington, but still smiling, lol

ellipisces -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 1:21:12)

Hang on a second, and I doubt if FP 2003 would solve this. The new version of Internet Explorer might though. Leave your hair in, you come to treasure every strand, as time goes by...

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 1:32:31)

I did what the attachment showed and my default is there to edit and right above it in Frontpage says www.tabernacletypology.com, but when I made a small change to see if it was working and I saved it and previewed it in my browser it said: C:\Documents and Settings\Barker's Comp\My Documents\My Webs\default.htm in the browser instead of my domain...........

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 1:38:28)

My website consists of over 50 pages I cannot import and edit one page...all my info, pages, pics, everything is unatainable....I dont get it...[sm=ask.gif]

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 1:43:57)

da strange is that when I go to file, open web and my empty web folders box appears and I try to do the process over again, praying maybe it will work, where I would type my website addy in there, when I use the arrow down button so I can just select it from the list instead of retyping the whold address,,,,,,is completly empty, it doesnt remember the addy I typed previously...normally it would...odd symptom, I think so, smile

Corrine -> RE: from dial-up to DSL and 98win to xp =( (5/28/2004 1:50:46)

Thank you so much for all your help, [sm=angel.gif] I am going to rest my weary head lol...I have a big day tomorrow however I will check back tomorrow evening, ya just never know, someone may find the miracle cure. Anyone out there have any ideas ?????

In a whirlwind of confusion,
Corrine
