www.thebubblejungle.co.uk - Advice Needed! - 6/1/2004 13:42:45
Hi, I'm just in the testing stages of my web site and I would appreciate any comments or improvements I could make. I've created it using Dreamweaver and 'tidied up' the code manually. I'm offering web design at competitive rates, mainly targeting clubs/small businesses.

First, I like the color choices that you have made for it. However, the link color that you have chosen blends into the green way too closely. You can barely see the links at all - I would change that. It is even a bit hard to read on the white as well. You need to add a some padding to your tables so that the text is not smashed to the right. I personally would center your layout. I think it would look better that way. As well, maybe some border around the content table... since you are working in such light colors, it really gets lost with all the white - don't get me wrong. It DOES look clean - just a bit TOO white (at least from my design eye). Is there a particular reason you have chosen to go with that flat title at the top VS your actual logo? I would change that, and put your logo there, and loose the gray lettering, AND the mass of whitespace at the top. The portfolio page definately needs some attention. With the light gray text, and no separation of the readable from the whitespace, is definately not working for me. Again, I would go with a centered layout, bordered, padded table, and I would stick with the green background color for all the tables.

Hi Lori, cheers for the comments. As you can see I've updated the site! I did think it was a bit too white so that's now been changed. I need a bit more content I think but have no ideas at the minute! Thanks again, Mark

WOW! Much Much Much better! As you can see in my link, I am a web developer, so you can peruse my site, and see if any content I have can be customized for you. Feel free to use what I have as a base to get started on your own.

The site look good and the colors are very nice, but there's just one thing I don't understand. Why does the site use frames when there's just one frame? Let's assume my browser doesn't support frames or that I have disabled them. The <noframes> section then redirectes me to www.thebubblejungle.uk.tt, but then there is another <noframes> section which points me to http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/thebubblejungle/index.htm. And after that I see the real site (and can take a look at the source, hehe). A typical website with mixed tables and CSS. Old fashioned, but functional in older browsers not supporting CSS2... But I really like the colors, you know. Just one thing about the appearance. Please, (as Lori said) give the green links a bit more contrast. Good that I'm not using a laptop: those would be almost impossible to see on an lcd screen. Regards, Bamse

Point taken about the links, I have a TFT screen and they display fine but I've made them a bit darker now. The frames aren't of my doing, I simply can't afford a hosting service so I've had to go with a free Wanadoo one, but this displays an annoying ad frame at the top. I bought a forwarding domain but this can only point to a specific folder, and as far as I'm aware Wanadoo display all their pages inside a frame. I then found out about www.joynic.com which is a free service where you can have .uk.tt domains which forward to an absolute URL, so now www.thebubblejungle.co.uk points to www.thebubblejungle.uk.tt. I guess this would all be solved by buying a real hosting solution, but until I find some money it isn't really necessary. What's the main difference between CSS and CSS2?

http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/changes.html The biggest change (IMO) being the positioning. So why I mentioned CSS(1) and CSS2, is that if you want to create a beautiful and functional layout, you will propably need the positioning. Well you can also try using CSS1 'float'. Regards, Bamse

Hi, just a quickie. Does my font look too big now? I liked it as it was (main font was the size of the nav bar font) but somebody said it was too small. Any thoughts? Plus, any ideas for how I can spruce up my images on the portfolio?

The fonts are fine. As for the portfolio Images, look at Lori's portfolio, use something like that.... and neaten them up a bit Dan

Hi again, I'm in need of some content for the home page right-hand side and also the services right-hand side. Any ideas? Thinking maybe an image, or a quote. Mark

Mark Hi again Mark, Site looks good still - no, font is not too big.... Agree with Dan that your port images don't look so good - too big, plain and washed out... at least for being a "designer" -- showcase that work! I used "quotes" as fillers on Dan's site........ I use Images on mine. For yours, I would use maybe ONE image (a small nice "enhanced" screenshot) of a work in progress, and a short quip about what you are doing to it... possibly a link to an old version (screenshot if need be) and a link to the new... Then below, a link to GET A QUOTE! Stick your "Friend's Links" on a "Links" page.... :)
