Please Help - 6/1/2004 17:58:16
Would anyone have any help or inspiration for my project.
I need to put banners on the top of the pages. The idea was to have a picture of each section on the banner of the appropriate page.
Any help would be appreciated

Please tell me what you think of the homepage also.

Thanks a million. http://www.gillisphoto.ie

I have one suggestion for the homepage - I hope you are not offended by it.

Being a photographer you need to show that your pics are of a very high standard. At least one of the pics on your homepage is of inferior quality - I presume it is a scan from the orginial. You may want to rescan with a higher resolution. I also think your text needs to be sharper.

From what I can see you are using images as headers. Perhaps you could save these at a higher resolution too.

The rest of the images - portraits & wedding look very good so don't undersell yourself with the homepage and the headers.

Which graphics editor are you using and what compression are you saving with?

I hope you find these comments helpful.

Desi

Hello, are you optimizing your photographs, you can do a great deal with your name and title and make a 600 by 100 banner for each page. The home page is very direct but the photo's are not very clear. Your banner is 1076x299 which can been scaled down to optimize your photos better or slice them into sections to reduce the size if your worried about load time.

I like the concept, there just should be more consistency throughout the site.

This is from a designers point of view other than a tech person.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions.

Well the photos are a bit unclear, but I was trying to make the website faster as I am running a slow connection like a lot of people in Ireland and was trying to keep loading times to a minimum. Any suggestions on how to keep it small but get good results.

Also when I place a header at the top of my pages there seems to be a gap between the header an top of page. Looked in code and could not find any border.. Any ideas

Thanks Again for the help

P.S. : All photos are shot on Digital anyway so no scanning is involved. And have all PSP files of the banners so it is easy to change them.

RE: Please Help - 6/2/2004 7:34:30
OK, I apologise in advance for anything that may seem offensive here:

The homepage:

As Desi has said, all images need to be at a high quality. They also need to be small in file size. The homepage image can be a bit smaller in file size, BUT it does need clarifying. The main text is all jagged round the edges. Did you have Anti-alias selected when you created the title? If so, you will need to remove the white border, or create it with a different font. It also makes the "slogan" a tad difficult to read.

NEVER put Still Under Construction on a site, in anyway, shape or form. It doesn't look good on you or the company etc.

The main image. The two photos to the right, you need to move the picture of the kids to below t'other one. They will look better that way.

YOu also need to use a different font for the content. Verdana/Tahoma/Arial/Sans-serif for the professional look.

Your Profile:

Use one font. The further down the page I get, the more is seems to want to turn into a ransom note. If you start using more than two fonts, even two can ruin it, you will find the site looks more like a ransom note than a business.

Weddings etc:

The Photo Gallery used is fine, just be warned. It uses JavaScript for the fancy scrolling thingy, and users are starting to turn JavaScript support in their browser(s) off. So some users may not get the full potential from there.

Contact Page:

Needs arranging better. Text not so large and not in TNR. You didn't even use a table to layout it out!!!! Display the data using a table, if will look more uniformed. The email address - Don't just put it straight on the web like that. You will get more SPAM than you can find in a tin at the local supermarket.

Overall:

Stick to one font throughout the site. Make the alterations as stated above, and it will be fine.

Dan

I concur with everything already said..especially the "lossy" photos on homepage.... better to sacrifice size than quality since quality IS your product. Actually, I like the Home page and the gallerys- great start. My peeve is underlines that are not links. Prior ro the net (hell prior to word processing) when we had only typewriters, underlying for emphasis for commin - those days are gone. there are plenty of methods to emphasize a section (bold, italic) dont underline unless its a ling- it confuses user.
good job though

if you resample your banner for the time being it will look a lot better. Personally i would maybe slice up the top and optimise each image individually, but you may be limited accorindg to what kind of editor you have and your table skills!

OK wow..

Ok well firstly the other pages are goin to be changed a bit anyway because I am only 17 and only got off school now so I only have time to do the website now.

How many slices would you suggest for the homepage banner?

I will work on it a bit tonight and will post again to see what you think.

RE: Please Help - 6/5/2004 4:21:16
On your contact page I would left align all the bold text (Studio At: etc) It looks a bit odd and all the other text aligns.

Reduce the size of the text it's huge and spoiling the profile page

Homepage I agree with above. You must have clear pics and your logo text isn't sharp enough.

I'd do 5 slices, one for each pic and one for the text for starters. Test it out on your slower connection and see what it looks like on the download then fiddle with it.

Otherwise it's a nice site.

Stop apologising for being 17. We've had enough of that from Giomanach. :)

Scuse me, but I'm 18 now:), anyhoo, you can't talk, you're mentally 10:)

She does have a point Brian, no need to apologise for your age, you will still get the same amount of respect from all of us, no matter how old you are.

you pictures (slices) are still the wrong size - what graphics app do you use/have? resize them in that and then drop them into FP, or at least RESAMPLE in FP as well as resize.

Brian, email me so I get your address - I've pulled the graphic into PSP and sliced it for you. I can send you the images and the associated HTML.

jaybee - nice of you to do that but wouldn't you be better working with the original files rather than saving from the jpegs?

Yes but it gives him an idea of what to do and the reduction in filesize. It actually comes out pretty clear too. If he doesn't have a decent graphics package then he can mail me the originals.

Thanks a million all of you for replies and ideas.

Am trying to change most of the things you pointed out.

Just one question, how can you get the headers to hug the top of the browser as in this page as I cannot get it to work. An example of it is at the top of this site.

You seem to have more than one body for a start

You have top padding

Can't see your style sheet so make sure your div is positioned correctly.

You also have two paragraphs in your header code. Get them out.

Replace your code with this. It then moves to the top. Make sure you copy and paste it into Notepad first, then from there into FP. If you don't it'll take all the formatting code with it.
