JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 8:03:14)

Enuff of the toothpaste, jaybee! This is what I'm going with: http://www.wealthcare-uk.com/index_new_colour_tester.htm - a few bold main colours, like http://www.jbvisions.co.uk/ in fact. :)

I've realised that it all depends soooh much on people's personal taste. I think I have to make decisions now.

I have other sites to build, so I'll be trying Lori's idea elsewhere - I *do* think it's neat, a very cool design.

Thanks, Lori. Actually, I like that style (which I've seen elsewhere), but I prefer it for a leisure site rather than a business-type one. There's soooh much 'in the eye of', isn't there? I am amazed at how you just sat down and did this for me without my even asking. Thank you again.

I'm also amazed at how you got such a huge image file down to 43916 bytes. I have a large (but necessary) image at http://www.handscombes.com/how_to_find_us.htm , but it's 164973 bytes and only 600x646.

John,

I build custom website designs, so I am certian that you have never seen that elsewhere - something similar maybe, but definately not my design ;) The mockups I do are saved for web in photoshop. I usually dont have a prob getting them down nice and small while still maintaining clarity.

Good luck with your site :)

EDIT TO ADD

PLLLEEEAAASSSEEE DO NOT use my design elsewhere on sites that you create! I hate to sound like a jerk, but when I do mockups and someone does not like them, they CAN be reused for other potential clients. So while you are welcome to do something similar or purchase the design and credit it to me, please do not duplicate my design and call it your own.

try this at 75k http://members.surfeu.fi/dave_pirjo/test-area/examples/graphics/newmap_resized_compressed_4couk_arrow_5000.gif

JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 9:02:47)

Lori,

I appreciate too much your kindness in creating it to copy it - as you said, I've seen "something similar". That's correct. I think it was a songwriting site somewhere...

Don't worry, I'm not a cribber, and certainly not a kindness-abuser!

JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 9:05:59)

Thanks, David, but my boss wouldn't run with that - he wants a very clear image, despite the size. Don't forget that the advisory is there for those with a slower connection...

LoriL1212 -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 9:09:07)

John,

If you ever happen to come across that site, think of me. I would love to see it.

No problem on making you a concept to go with - sorry it did not work for you. Again, I do hate to be so end-all-be-all, but that was meant to give you a concept for YOUR personal site.... I have dealt with "cribbers" as you call them more times then I would like to share here.

If I can ever help you in your future endeavors, please do not hesitate to ask me any questions ;)

Giomanach -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 9:10:30)

<confession [:-]>

I hold my hands up here, to back up Lori. Lori designed and created my web @ giomanach.com. I have altered it to suit my contact form, but that's it. I have also left the backlink to Lori's web at the bottom of every page. That link etc, will stay there, the design won't change for a long time, why? B'cos Lori rightfully owns the copyright to the site template, and until I revamp the whole web, it's staying that way.

</confession [:-]>

BTW John, this would be a smart move. Implement Lori's design, and create a back link to her site.

Dan

Here is the map after my try at resizing (58k):

JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 9:27:04)

I shall certainly credit Lori if I use anything that's derived from her advising me and, as I said, I have other sites to build...

But do remember that WealthCare-UK.com is a site full of financial calculators, and there is a limit to the amount of personalisation that I can do with them, IYSWIM: http://www.wealthcare-uk.com/01_full_pensions_audit.html

Sure, I can play around with the Home Page, About this Site, Disclaimers page, etc., but I want to keep the style uniform, and there's not enough real estate on the big calculators' pages to do much with the design.

JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 9:30:41)

Lori,

When I was building that site, I got it down to about that size, but it is distorted, and I need it big & clean. I originally received it as a gynormous TIFF file, so I think I did pretty well getting it down its present size, and keep the clarity.

LoriL1212 -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 9:35:26)

Okay, for me neither are perfectly clear, and I have to say that the resize I did does not look much different then your original. I have others here with me who say the same :)

Nonetheless, good luck.

JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 9:48:59)

OK, I spoke to soon... Misunderstanding. BRB.

JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 10:10:34)

Lori & David,

I owe you both an apology. I have my gifs open in IE at the moment, and your images both looked small & unclear. I re-opened them in PSP. And once incorporated into the site, it's a different story.

Thank you both - they are indeed a lot smaller, and my page at http://www.handscombes.com/how_to_find_us.htm is a lot 'lighter'!

LoriL1212 -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 10:14:57)

Glad to help :)

d a v e -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 10:19:46)

of course if you really want it to look clear then redraw them as vectors/paths in PSP and retype all the text, you might even save a couple of kb as well, but i think you will probably be too busy and lori has fitted you out with nice small version! bit strange how they looked bad for you in IE?! still as long as you've got it now :)
p.s. lori only spent about 2 seconds optimising mine whereas i bet you spent ages: maybe 3 or 4 seconds ;)

JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/8/2004 10:27:08)

LOL Nice one, Dave!

Actually, I dealt with that image file way back in my very JohnLearner days, 4 or 5 years ago, and I'd just never got round to looking at it again.

Have a nice day, both of you - I'd better get back to my site.

Warm regards & thanks,

John.

Actually, I optimized his... and a little longer then two seconds. I kept going down down down in color levels of gif. My final is 16 color :)

Thanks, Lori - I'm just going to ask you this little favour... I need the logo here http://www.fsa.gov.uk/who/ (top right) to be about 95x95 and transparent. I can do this, but it's one of those images that's difficult (at least for me) to get 'cleanly' transparent - on a dark background, there are white bits showing.

Can you help, plz?

John.

JohnLearner -> RE: WealthCare-UK.com - your views? (6/11/2004 6:05:55)

Hi, folks,

I may be going away for a few days, so if I don't post again for a while, you'll know why. I'll be back on June 21 at the latest.

John.
