Shopping Cart Nightmare! - 6/3/2004 12:59:11
Hi Guys
I am pulling my hair out here! I do hope someone can help. I am having great trouble with my shopping cart. every now and again i am getting an 'undefined0undefined' value and so do my repeat customers, and some new ones too when they place an order.
I am using JShop and their level of help has been zero. I am not a web designer, nor am i too clever in this area, so if some of you could try out the site and place a dummy order and placing in the comments box that you are from the OutFront Forum (so i know this is a test)and maybe look at the source code of the offending pages - i would be eternally grateful!

Keeping my pinkies crossed!

Is it based on ASP or PHP shopping cart?

It's a coding problem. When I search the user end source code, there's no such thing as undefined0undefined anywhere. It's JavaScript related by the looks of it. But first, I need to know - Are you pulling data from a DB at all?

There's also a hell of a lot of JavaScript on the pages. I haven't placed an order, it might not work.

It's an Internet Explorer problem.

I've ordered 107 extra Large dresses using Firefox! :)

That's interesting. It's usually Firefox that throws a wobbler with order forms.

IE has obviously been thrown into quirks mode, and there's far too much coding to see it straight off

Swimming through the coding, your problem lies within these two:

quote:

function showPriceSingle(pricestring) {
index = document.cookie.indexOf('TheCurrency');
countbegin=(document.cookie.indexOf('=',index)+1);
countend=document.cookie.indexOf(';',index);
if(countend==-1) { countend=document.cookie.length; }
theCurrency=document.cookie.substring(countbegin,countend);
return presentValue(pricestring,currencyDecimals[theCurrency],currencyPre[theCurrency],currencyMiddle[theCurrency],currencyPost[theCurrency]);
}

quote:

document.writeln("<td bgcolor=8080C0 align=right><font face='Arial,Helvetica' size=2 color=000000><b>"+showPriceSingle(totprice)+"</b></font></td>");

Now, I can't see a problem there, but this is common throughout the web. Something in that lot is forcing IE into quirks mode, and it isn't reading the info properly. Time to think about this over a few sarnies.....

Interesting. First time it worked, now it doesn't.

There's no Doctype in the pages BTW.

That's by the by, JavaScript problem:)

It's a JavaScript shopping cart, who's gonna burn it first?

1. Unreliable as you have just found out

2. Not secure enough

It's a problem with cookies.

The site dumps around 8 session cookies on my machine. The first time you bring it up the prices are fine and you can put an order through. The second time it has prices undefined0undefined.

I deleted all cookies and went back in and it's OK again. I think it's not deleting the session cookies.

Yep that's it. Just sent another order. At the end there are still session cookies on my machine. After the order is processed you're just left on the confirmation page. You have no option to go anywhere else. I think maybe you're missing a bit which goes back to a sensible page and deletes the cookies.

Hi Guys
Thanks for that, and jaybee thanks for your very generous order! ;o)
JShops actually puts the code in for me. It is as you can see the code is Java script based and JShops generates the code for each page. I just top and tail it for the HTML look, feel and function.
I would like to understand more about all the comments about IE having the problem and what i might be able to do about it.

It may help you guys to understand that each product page with regards to JShops is identical the other pages that are obviously causing my problems are basket, and buy pages.

Thanks again

Elle

One of JShop configuration parameters sets the cookie expiry by default to 1 hour. This expiry is reset with every item that is added to the basket. Should i consider changing this? or should i force (somehow)IE to invoke the clear page (www.thenakedmonkey.co.uk/clear.html)

The expiry should be set to the session, so users can order mulitple items. I don't have JShops, I heavily use ASP for shopping carts etc.
You need to reset cookies every session, not every hour. WHich is why ASP is better.

clear.html needs to be run at the start of every session

Yes, the only way I can get it to clear the cookies is sheer brute force or shut down all browsers.

The cookie settings say they are session but they seem to be hanging around. I'm still not convinced that there isn't a page missing that takes you from order confirmation back to your site.

As you can see, JavaScript is a burden rather than a helper, do you know if your server is ASP or PHP enabled?

Let's see if we can sort out an easier - less need for maintain solution:)

The hosting service appears to be PHP based. I also just noticed in the expiry date on the currency cookie was set to Dec 2010!?! and have now set that so its settings are now all the same as the other cookies.
This is all JShop code.

Yes there should be a link onto other pages after the confirmation page, and will get around to doing something about... don't forget you are dealing with a dunce here! ;o)

Easy way to test:

Create a new web page called test.php

Insert the following coding via Notepad:

<?
echo "Hello World";
phpinfo();
?>

Upload to server and browse to the page via your web browser. YOu should see Hello World! on te page followed by bunch of tables with what looks like useless info:).

Even if you just get Hello World, it works:)

Then we can decide on a PHP shopping cart, of which I would be more than happy to intgrate for you:)

There's no pleasing some people:):)

Have put a test.php page onto the web site and it has confirmed the service is php enabled.
Have made some minor adjustments and removed spurious (new word invention here i think!) code from the home page, but still appears to be in vain and am still getting undefined. Ideally i would like to get this working as i have spent many hours on all my products and using the piece of s!"$%! program.

well you brits do have seniority..lol...so sarnie is generic sandwich....hhhmmm
when i was a kid, my buddies dad would get up in the morning, make a pot of strong coffee...put 2 teaspoons of instant coffee in a cup and pour perked coffee into it, then make a sarnie of beets, onions and mustard. he started the day that way..no wonder he drank heavily at nite! but he lived to be 89

I looked through many shopping cart options and found a superb asp one for a very reasonable price called productcart by Early Impact. It has a browser based control panel so once it is setup your customer can add and delete products easily.
