discussion web problems - 6/3/2004 15:10:10
I sure hope someone can help me with this. This is driving me crazy.
We've made a discussion site using the Discussion Web Wizard. When someone goes to the site, it seems to work fine. They can make their message and everything. The problem is that when the Table of Contents page is refreshed, no new messages are showing up like they're supposed to. But, when I open the TOC page in FrontPage and save it, the posts will then show up online.
I've taken the pages and put them on another web server and it works just like it's supposed to, showing the posts whenever the page is refreshed without having to go and save the page in FrontPage. But, there are too many differences between the two web servers to help us figure out what the problem might be (different OS, different Serv Ext version, etc.).
Also, the search box isn't showing up on the search page. Everything else will show up, except the Search box.
Every piece of material we can find points to something wrong with the Server Extensions, but no one seems to know exactly what the problem is, so we don't know how to fix it.
I'm currently using FrontPage 2003 and Server Extensions 2002. But, other people in my department have had the same problem using FrontPage XP.
Can anyone please help me with this? Any helpful information would be gratefully appreciated!

I would say the server isn't accepting the installation of the FPSE. Is the server dedicated to the web, or is it shared as a file server etc as well?

The web server we have is dedicated solely to the web. We don't use it for anything else. What bugs us is that in addition to the problems we're having with the FrontPage Discussion Web, the FrontPage Search component isn't working either. But, the FrontPage search component has worked before, even while we still had our FP 2002 Server Extensions, but back around December or so we noticed they all the sudden stopped working. We had some problems with hackers that did some damage to our systems around that time, so we're thinking that may have something to do with our sudden problems with all this. We just don't know what the problem is to fix it.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Nikki

Can I see the server error logs?

Some of the facilities you can produce via FP2003 also require Sharepoint services to function. Do you have Sharepoint Services Installed on the server?

I would check the OS, IIS, and any other installed components etc. I'll get the download link for HiJack This, I think something is running at the same time preventing IIS from functioning correctly, probably dropped in via the hackers

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

Download, to it's own directory on the server. Run, Click Save Log (bottom left), and email the log to outfront@giomanach.com I'll have a look see what's running

I'll have to wait until our web master comes in to show you the server logs. I don't have access to those.
I wondered if it was something to do with SharePoint, mostly because the Discussion Web works fine on a server set up with 2000 Serv Ext, but not on our 2002 Serv Ext. Another department has a dedicated web server with 2000 Serv Ext and it seems to work fine. But, we've also tried to build a web with FP 2002 and FP 2000 and it still doesn't seem to work on our server. We do have SharePoint Services on our server.

OK

I can't tell you anymore till I've seen the error logs, and what HiJack This has to say.

Just email the logs to the address given above, and I'll come back, hopefully, with the solution

Our web master is going to e-mail you the logs covering the past couple of weeks, since that's the time frame that goes with us trying to figure out what the deal is with the Discussion Web. We have to wait until later in the morning to get permission to do the HiJack This program on our server. But, we'll send you the log once we get the okay.
Thanks for all the help.

Are you having problems obtaining the logs or sending them to me? I haven't as yet received anything from yourselves

When our web master talked to our guy who takes care of the servers, he started checking out the problem himself. He's figured out that we're having problems with one of the lines of code that FrontPage automatically makes with the Discussion Web. If the line of code is changed, then the pages work just fine. So, we're going back to our server and seeing if there's something that we missed with that right now.

Thanks for your help.

Quite Welcome

You have just found out why you shouldn't really use FP discussion webs. Try something like Snitz - http://forum.snitz.com - it's free, easy to set up, and just needs an ASP enabled server

If you have any more questions, just ask:)

Thank you. Those Discussion Webs are more trouble than what they're worth. I'll check out that Discussion Web you mentioned. We may just have to start telling people to use that,

Thanks again for all your help.

Dan

I'm not very experienced with FrontPage, but I have a question regarding discussion webs. I'm using FrontPage 2003 and I have developed a discussion web. I've been testing my discussion web and I just noticed that if I reply to my original post, I can't reply to that reply.

How do I either add a shared border with the "reply" option on it, or add a "reply" link to those original reply messages?

I hope I didn't make this ultra confusing.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!

Jason

PS. I've also noticed that the reply pages don't have a matching background (it's just plain ole white). I've tried to edit this, but I can't even find the page to edit it. All the pages I have listed in my directory have the same colored background, but not the reply pages...hopefully I'm not too far off topic.

Hi Jason & Welcome to Outfront

Can't do much without a link to look at and test. If you could provide me with that, I can take a good look into your problem.

You should note that FP Discussion boards are far from reliable, and most find them more trouble than they are worth. There are many other options out there to fulfil your needs, both ASP & PHP based. And we're here to help with all of them (including FP Discussion Boards :))

Thank you for the welcome.

Yes, I suppose a link would be helpful. I tend to forget semi-important steps. The link is http://sophondacoxxx.tripod.com/disc5_welc.htm. If you click on the Table of Contents and read one (or both) of the reply articles I think you'll see what I'm talking about. Not only will the background be white, but there will be no reply options.

I would have just added a reply link, but I can't even find this page in my folders to edit it. If you think there's something else that would be better, I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks again for all your help,

Jason

The reply pages are blank on background etc, because they have no formal formatting. The pages are created by FPSE processes & have no formatting on them of any kind, just Tripods crappy ads. Tripod as a host for FPSE site, truely (and imho) sucks.

What you need to do is poke about in FP and look for the output pages settings, see if you can set a template for them, if not, its time to move host, and setup a real forum, like PHPbb or Snitz. One being PHP other being ASP.
