leanneB14 -> FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/4/2004 2:16:02)

I try to convert a folder to a web and i get this error...

Server Error: Unable to create a disk-based web at "c:\My Webs\Intranet\ because its parent web would not be a disk based web. Create the disk-based web elsewhere, outside your web servers' document hierarchy

I don't understand as the web i am working on is on my hard drive, so i would have thought that it is a disk based web?

BobbyDouglas -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/4/2004 2:42:04)

Have you tried to make a new web, and then put those files in the new web?

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/6/2004 19:36:11)

I just did then, and got pretty much the same error.

any ideas what i am doing wrong?

BobbyDouglas -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/6/2004 19:47:17)

"Pretty much" ?

What error did you get?

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/6/2004 20:35:24)

the error is exactly the same but it doesn't have the "server error:" at the start.

but if you want it again it says...

Unable to create a disk based web at "c:\mywebs\newweb" because its parent web would not be a disk-based web. Create the disk-based web elsewhere, outside of your webservers' document hierarchy.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/6/2004 21:32:11)

Does this happen when you create the new web? Or when you paste a folder into the new web?

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/6/2004 22:01:36)

This occurs when i try to create a new empty web

BobbyDouglas -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/6/2004 22:32:23)

Can you try to make a new web on C:\TestingFolder1 ?

Tell me if that works & make sure you use TestingFolder1 as the name of the fodler.

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/6/2004 23:42:08)

Yeah that worked

BobbyDouglas -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/7/2004 0:12:20)

You created C:\TestingFolder1 in order to make sure that FP was able to create new webs. Now we have to figure out why it cannot create one at c:\My Webs\Intranet\

There must be something wrong with that folder. The two ideas I have might correct it. First, I would make sure you restart your computer, and then open FP ONLY. There might be a problem with another program accessing that particular directory.

If that does not work, I would re-create the folder by making a backup of it, then testing the backup and make sure it was backed up correctly, and then delete the folder and make it again. Then test it out.

If you have RealVNC I could take a look at the problem on your computer from mine.

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/7/2004 2:29:38)

Thanks I'll try out the suggestions

I just don't quite understand what you mean with the second suggestion.
I need to make a backup, and then test that that backup is what?
Then i delete the backup? and recreate it again and try adding a new web to the backup?

if you could explain this for me that would be great.

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/7/2004 2:46:00)

ok i tried your first suggestion and that didn't do anything. When i find out exactly what you mean by your second suggestion i'll try that too

BobbyDouglas -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/7/2004 3:24:04)

Make a backup, and make sure that the backup will work when you put it back.

Lets say this screws up everything and you need to revert to the backup you just made, well make sure you will be able to do that.

Sometimes a backup might not work, I am just saying that you need to make certain that you back it up, and the backup works.

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/8/2004 1:46:08)

Still not working!

I can add a new web if i add it to the http: address, however, this isn't acceptable as I will have other users wanting to add new webs, and they don't have permissions to access the http:// address. So i want them to add it to their own copy on their hard drive, which is then integrated back onto the server when they are happy with the changes they have made.

this is very weird, i'm sure i could add a new web before. maybe i'll just have to get them to add new folders, and then i can convert it to a web on the server.

thanks for all your help

BobbyDouglas -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/8/2004 21:50:24)

Hoepfully someone else can pick this up. Im taking off to cali for two months so I wont be spending much time here.

BeTheBall -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/8/2004 23:16:53)

Try this:

Open your main web. In folder view, right-click the top-most folder. Click "Add Folder". Give the new folder a name and then right-click it and choose "Convert to Web". Does that work or does it trigger the same error? If it works, just paste everything from the folder that wouldn't convert over to the new sub-web or maybe better, import the files.

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/8/2004 23:23:45)

Same error.

Thanks for trying to help though.

BeTheBall -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/9/2004 9:14:08)

Is your site also published? Perhaps you can open the site on the server and there convert the folder to a subweb and then publish from the server back to your PC. Just a thought.

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/9/2004 20:21:10)

Yes i know i can do that, if you see what i wrote a few posts ago though this isn't really an option.

BeTheBall -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/9/2004 20:40:06)

I think you misunderstand. Once you add the subweb on the server, publish the site from the server back to your PC. This will replace your working copy with what will hopefully be a copy with an operational subweb. My thought is this just may undo whatever has triggered your current problem and again allow you to add subwebs without problems.

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/9/2004 21:52:51)

Ah ok, sorry didn't quite read all of your post. I missed the publish from server back to my PC. Unfortuantly this didn't fix the problem. I think i'm just going to have to give up. Thanks for trying to help me. I really appreciate it. Luckily for me this will no longer be my problem in a few weeks when i finish working at this particularly company. So i think i can leave it for someone else to try solve. It's possible that this is because we are using a source control integration, and maybe it cannot create new webs, i am yet to get any answers from the ISV though on that. They don't seem to have much information out there, and no one wants to answer my questions.

Thanks again
Leanne

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/9/2004 23:40:04)

Oops left something out...

The reason your suggestion didn't work was that it said that where i was trying to publish to on my computer was a server based web. Which is practically the same thing it was telling me before.
I think somehow my computer thinks my web is being hosted but its not, maybe i should uninstall the IIS? Do you think this would help?

Boy, I don't know. I played with several settings on my PC last night trying to duplicate your problem and could not get that error. I even created a folder (not a web) and then tried creating a web under the folder. FP let me do it with no trouble at all.

What is the path to your web? For example, C:\mywebs\testweb\

dash -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/10/2004 1:42:38)

I am having the same problem converting a folder and received the exact same error as in the first post. I'm using FP2003.

I also am unable to convert to web using a new folder.

I opened the site live, and attempted to convert the folder server side, and that choice is not available when I right click on the folder I want to convert. Maybe it's operator error [;)]?!

I also downloaded the file from the server to my hard drive, etc. and when I convert to web I still get the same error. Any suggestions are appreciated!

BeTheBall -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/10/2004 8:40:32)

The last thing I can think to try would be this. Create a new web in a path different from that FP uses by default. Maybe your desktop or perhaps your D: drive. Then import the existing web into the new one. Then verify whether FP will let you convert the imported folder to a web. If successful, I would go back and delete the original web, but do so via FrontPage not Windows Explorer as I have read that deleting a web via Windows Explorer may be one of the causes of the types of problems you are experiencing. To delete the web via FP, open the web and then right-click the top most folder in Folder View and choose delete. I am not at all positive this will work, having not experienced this problem, but it is worth a try.

dash -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/10/2004 9:20:51)

Thanks, Duane, I''ll work on that this evening and let you know what happens. I don't delete webs via Explorer, so that's not an issue.

dash -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/11/2004 0:51:13)

Well, I got it to work, thanks to some extra help from The Big O, since I'm a hosting client [;)].

My error, I think, is that I was opening my site live by clicking on "Remote web site" at the bottom of the screen in the nav bar in FP2003, instead of using File > Open Site > http://www.url.com > useID/pw > OK, as Thomas suggested.

Why does the method used for opening the site make a difference in the ability of a function to work? As a matter of interest, I tested several times on various folders and the same error and then the same success happened each time.

Hope this helps someone else as well,
trish

leanneB14 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (6/21/2004 1:35:58)

ok tried your final suggestion and it didn't work. All i can think of now is that there is a file in the web that makes frontpage think its a server-based web rather than a disk-based web.
Any ideas on that.

I've tried to recreate the problem in new webs and yeah i can't seem to do it. I have no idea what the problem is. I may just try contacting microsoft, but i have no idea how to do that.

Teriel9 -> RE: FrontPage Error - won't let convert to web (11/3/2004 6:20:33)

I have had the same problem and found that, because my web was created in FP98 and opened in FP2003, "Create Subweb" would not work.
I built a new "Testweb" in FP2003 and the "Create subweb" worked perfectly.
I suspect that your web may have been created in an earlier version of FP, so if you try making a small test web, create a new folder and then try it may work
