CSS modification - 6/11/2004 17:18:38
I previously used FP to build a site with tables. Now I'm building a very simple site. I've been told that using CSS makes sense. I have a two-column template that I was thinking of having someone modify for me and I would then use it for future modification. With tables I could easily do something like this and later add forms, etc. and see exactly where to enter such. My concern is that with CSS I might not be able to easily modify a template without having knowledge of linking sheets and I wouldn't be able to see where an item was being placed on the page.

Am I correct in these assumptions? If so, and I plan on making constant adjustments and don't desire to hire outside help each time, would I be better off to just do it myself with tables? Would my site really lose that much? Thanks.

Don't panic about css. All your formatting is held in the external style sheet and if that style sheet applies to all your pages then you make one change there and it goes across your whole site. So if you want a blue background instead of a red one the change is quick.

Tables are replaced with Divs. You will have two divs which replace your table with two columns.

You just put your content into the Div instead of the table cell.

I would suggest getting one set up and having a play around with it.

The savings in page size are worth it and you'll be future proofing your site for SE changes as well as acessibility regulations.

There's a book recommended by one of the experts on here who is away at the moment - Elizabeth Castro - HTML 5 which has very good and clear explanations of HTML, XHTML & CSS. Great book, easy to follow and examples are available on her web site. http://www.cookwood.com/html5ed/

Welcome to Outfront :)

Thanks so much for the info and the welcome. What if I want to a a form, for example. With tables I could see exactly where that would be. From this basic CSS two-column template I have, each column is on top of each other in the Normal view. I'm not sure where it would appear in the actual page. How do I deal with things like that?

FP isn't very good with showing css layout in normal view. The best way is to flip between normal and Preview although I must admit I'm using FP2003 which handles css better than the previous versions.

The other way to look at it is use the browser preview button on the menu bar. Open it the first time, minimise it and then just refresh it each time you have done a change and saved the page.

There are some packages around specifically for css development such as Rapid CSS and they show previews on the fly but you need to get to grips with css to use them.

I suggest you look at getting that book. It's a goldmine.

If you get completely stuck just come back and post the code for your page and style sheet on here and people will help you. If I'm not around there's loads of others but as it's the weekend you might have to wait a little while for someone to come on, but you will get help. :)
