Access local web on SBS 2000 Server - 6/14/2004 16:17:58
Hi all!

Does anyone know where I might be able to change the settings this message is talking about? I'm trying to open the company web on the SBS 2000 Server.

'The system couldn't log you on because you are connecting through a proxy server, but the server's authentication scheme(s), do not work across a proxy. Try adding the server to the Exceptions box in the Proxy Settings dialog, or request the server administrator to enable another authentication scheme'

Thanks,
Carrie

I do:)

Your connection to the internet goes through another server, called a proxy server. It "legally" represents all of the computers on your network.

quote:

Try adding the server to the Exceptions box in the Proxy Settings dialog
this represents a hole in your firewall:)
quote:

request the server administrator to enable another authentication scheme'
If possible you should attempt this. The server setting is just the "Basic Authentication" setting.

Thank you :)

Is it a complex procedure to change the authentication scheme? I'm trying to setup an intranet. I have access to the local web via web browser, but I'm unable to import or publish to that location [from my workstation].
Is there a checkbox I have to click or something? If it's fairly straightforward I'm sure I could do it, I have admin account access, but I need directions.

Thanks,
Carrie

Nevermind. I found the setting, but I also read about it, and it makes me uncomfortable to be running it like this.
How would you manage the company intranet with Frontpage and SBS 2000 from a cient machine? Is there a more secure way to do this?

Thanks,
Carrie

Well, if it really is behind a firewall, (using a proxy server), and that server is properly configured, then you really shouldn't have to worry about either set-up. If you want to go the other route...

You'll have to access the proxy server, it may be running on the SBS machine. Find the "exceptions" section. It may be in "Advanced" or someplace like that. It may also be called a whitelist. Enter the URL of your webserver in the list.

As far as how I would do it. I would locate that webserver in a DMZ. Google and you shall find...

Wow! You got alot of bogus answers to your problem. Never fear, help is here.
1. Start FrontPage
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. On the General tab, click Proxy Settings.
4. On the Connections tab under the Dialup and Virtual Private Network Settings, highlight the internet connection you are using.
5. Click the Settings Button
6. Under the Proxy Server settings, deselect the "Use Proxy Server for this Connection"
7. Click OK 3 times

There you have it. Pretty simple stuff. No need to switch ISP; no need to change Server Authentication methods and all the other far fetch solutions provided to you earlier.:)
