Giomanach -> Yahoo! and their Mail Inbox Size Increase (6/16/2004 2:36:18)

Hi All

This was mentioned in Outfront News, and I thought I'd share my view, and allow you lot argue about it with me.[:D]

Google have started Gmail, with 1000MB per account. Very nice, and then Yahoo! Increase the size of my inbox to 100MB, coincendence? I think not.

Yahoo sent a standard email round, basically saying they had upgraded my account from 4MB to 100MB. Slight problem. I have had my Yahoo! email address for nigh on 7 years now, and I signed up back when they gave 6MB inboxes. It never changed. And all that address does now is serve as Yahoo Messenger login, and a SPAM inbox, it gets around 400-500 a day.

IMO, I think Yahoo! increasing the inbox size is all a marketing stunt to try and deter us from using GMail. And to be honest I don't think it will work. Google offer, a bigger, better service. And for me, the Yahoo! service on the email hasn't improved all that much over the past 7 years.

So, Coincedence or Marketing stunt?

I say Marketing Stunt, what about the rest of you?

Dan

It's not a stunt, it's a tactical response to a perceived threat from a new competitor. Good business practice. They would be mad to just ignore Gmail and assume their busineess will be unaffected. What would you do?

It's a healthy sign that the competitve marketplace works.

If it's a tactical response, why haven't MSN done it with their Hotmail services? I'm sure if it was seen as a threat, other companies would have done so.

You also have to remember, you need an invite to join GMail, whereas you can sign up left right and center to Yahoo! and MSN, therefore I see no reason for the comptetive actions.

Not everyone gets the invitation to join GMail.

They will eventually, they just are slower to respond, perhaps they don't see it as a threat during the test phase.

That's another tactic, they are testing it, in a few months it will be as freely available as all the others. The long term goal is to be number one, and you don't achieve dominance by only serving 2% of the potential market.
