Me again, CSS Layouts - 6/16/2004 13:15:22
Hi, I was wondering whether anyone could provide me with some CSS for this template? It seems SOOO simple but I can't manage to achieve the correct outcome. Works in IE but is terrible in Firefox.

Oh yes, I'd like the elements to be centred, good idea? Possibly with no top or bottom margins to the pages.

Cheers,

Mark

The template is at http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/thebubblejungle/images/layout.gif

Someone probably could "give" you the layout in css, however, you would not be learning anything. Best way to get to it is to read the tutorials that I left for you in the other thread, and learn how to do it. If you have problems while learning feel free to head back here and we can help you out:)

I have read the tutorials, ok ok I'll do it myself! I can do it, it's just it looks bad in other browsers so I wondered if there was some sort of convention that was needed? I know you can use @import inside the style tags so this might solve the problems. Cheers.

Hi Mark,
Are you validating your css as well as your xhtml as you are going along?

And also, check your page in the "other browsers" and work on them via viewing those. THEN go back and tweak as you have to for IE. IE tends to be extremely forgiving of lots.

Hi, I'm not validating the CSS, but am the HTML. I'm not using XHTML, is this another thing I should look into? Are there any differences in tags? Can you define your own or something?

I'll do that in the browsers, I have most of them installed for testing purposes.

Thanks.

XHTML is a more compliant version of HTML. Some of the tags are not available or different. IE <br> becomes <br />.

To define your own your talking about XML.

Go take a look at www.w3schools.org

Sometimes imports are the only way to go.

I'll have a look at your code later.

Mornin Mark,
You should be validating your css as well. It is most important that you do both. I would suggest learning xhtml. Jaybee is right, xhtml is just a bit stricter, but easy to learn. Way easy to learn!

These are excellent links Jaybee, if they aren't in the links thread you should add them. thanks!

Mark

Look at it this way, back in November 03 when I first joined Outfront, I knew nothing about CSS, and now, I can't write anything but the valid stuff:)

But then again, I've had the best two CSS tutors going, haven't I Deb? lol

You got yourself a head start just by registering at Outfront

I would have answered to this earlier, but some of us seem to get snowed under with work........lol

Dan

Thanks all! I've now updated my site so that it's XHTML and CSS, seem to have it all working. Looks better in Netscape and FF which is a dramatic turn of events, because the navigation height is set to 'auto' otherwise they display the text off-centre. I've tried adding a vertical-align element but no no avail. The CSS validates, although my XHTML doesn't, it would if I had a porper host!

Too true, I do wish to thank you allfor welcoming me and helping me out.

Mark, you can validate your xhtml from on your computer. All you have to do is upload the file and viola, it validates it. this way you would know if all is going ok with it.
