alansmith -> clever trick to get to the top for highly competetive terms (6/18/2004 4:02:12)

Hi,

I am adding this topic again as for some strage reason Mojo thinks it is not related to SEO.
I fail to see how as this search has got my homepack top of google with out any effort and without me every placing a link with my name on to it.

Basically goto google and do a search for alansmith my homepage is the computingfuture one btw. I use the alansmith username on forums but have never linked it to my website. My question is how does google know that its me and is this a clever trick to get to the top for highly competetive terms.

According to the email I recieved from MOJO this email should be in general discussion and not the SEO forum. I disagree as this is clearly an SEO questions, also instead of moving the post to the correct forum MOJO deemed it fit to delete it, a policy a strongly object too.

Mojo's Email:

Reason:Off topic - belongs in the Lounge

It is a shame I cannot add a poll here as I would have liked some feedback from the users as to whether this is in the right place or not. I have an article on my website about Links vs Content, it is top in google if anyone bothers to look, in my opinion content is dead as far as SEO if concerned and it is all about the links these days, but from authorative sites not forums. The people who goto your site from these design & seo forums generate traffic but never seem to buy anything when they get there.

Alan

Mojo had every right to remove the thread. ASking for the reason why webs with you user name on come first in the SERPs is a personal question, not a Web Biz or SEO related question.

EG - If you search for giomanach on google, I practically fill the first page of SERPs, one b'cos I have backlinks to my site, and two, b'cos I use Giomanach as a username everywhere.

It's not a trick, it's pure coincedence

If Mojo Delete's this again, I won't be surprised

Dan

I've got to respectfully disagree. I think it is a blend. I think you are right as this is one piece and VERY important but content does play a factor also.

<edit>Ironic as Mojo will agree with your thoughts on links VS. content.</edit>

Take care,

Brian

What can I say? From memory, your original post had a different title and phrased your question in a different manner. Normally, I would be able to see the post I deleted, but for some reason I am not able to see it today.

We are having a lot of posters attempt to use the SEO forums (and others) to build on topic backlinks. You insist that the original post belongs here - not in the lounge. OK, I could have made a mistake, but the 4 links in your signature (and one of them is a redirect) cause me to look a bit narrow on some of your posts.

If I made a mistake - sorry. Then again, if it looks like a duck....

You may find this web site of use. I used it a lot when trying to get my first site to the top of the rankings.

http://www.marketposition.com/

Did it work? Well the site is now at 1, 2 and 5 on its keyword search out of 500,000 returned results.

[&:]well, let's see.

[;)]if

Most of the people on the web named Alan Smith spelled it that way

and

Most of those people would probably not be posting in any forums or have many links or be knowledgable about search

[8|]then get used to it! The Internet Works! Your handle (alansmith) is #1!

What if my handle was say "britney spears", etc. Would it get me top for something competetive?

No, because there would be HEAVY competition. Hitting number on a non competitive user name is different. Don't get me wrong it would be one piece in the overall SEO puzzle and would help....just wouldn't get you near the top.

Take care,

Brian

Wow, that was clever I have been top for AlanSmith in google for months and all of a sudden I have completely dissapeared overnight. Who did that and how? Can I do it to my competition?

It depends. Visit your site with the G toolbar. Is the bar white, grey or?? Depending on this it will tell you what your actions will need to be. Most likely it is something that you have done to get this results, not anthers actions.

As far as being malicous to another users web site (and hard work)....get real!!! I hate people with this kind of mentality. They beat me in rankings so I am going to try and sabotage their rankings. That just leaves a BAD taste in my mouth Alan but I guess my sig. states my mentality so take it for what it is worth.

Take care,

Brian
