Ready for Critique - 6/20/2004 17:32:32
Howdy Everyone!
I guess I'm ready for a review. It's my 1st attempt. I used FP2000 & most of the image editing was with MGI Photosuite (the freeby version).
Thanks for any & all input! JR

P.S. There was also alot of help from this forum, so thanks for that also!

First to say I don't like textured backgrounds. I also like for the content to be contained somehow. Your pictures and text are scattered to much all over the page. It is custom that the logo should be a home link and not a mailto one.
Anyway, navigation works fine, logo is very interesting. I got the immpression you've got great design potential.

I have to disagree with Kruno, The textured background is quite effective, but the content is far to sparse. It needs pulling together. Otherwise, fine.

It has a lot of potential

Dan

BTW - Kruno, good luck in Portugal tonight:):)

generally don't like backgrounds much either but this one is important to the look of the site.

bit of a tidy and tighten and it's fine

I'm not sure what you're meaning by content being scattered and far too sparce? Do I need to add content or tighten up the page layout?

There is alot of discussion right now as to the term "Content". If I'm getting it right it must mean more than basic page design - i.e. banner, copy placement, images, and navigation buttons.

I've been wanting to redesign the home page, but I was thinking maybe less images so it will load faster?
Suggestions...? Thanks!

You should tighten up the page layout. The page loads fast enough, so you can keep the pictures, but 6 pictures in a row and all of them are different sizes - it just doesn't look neet to me. I think your layout needs some visual structure. For instance, I think that those 6 pictures mentioned before would look better if placed in a bordered table so their size differenece wouldn't be in the first plan any more. The same goes for the other sectiones (banner, copy placement, images, and navigation buttons as you said).

P.S. for Dan
I just knew we were going to loose...:):) ( I'm not such a big fan so I can grin about it)

It means words. Words that are relevant to your site. Think of it as the equivalent to a brochure. You wouldn't send that out with just pictures and no explanation of your company, products or ethos. You'd put a few paragraphs in that pull people into the pages. Same with a web site but the spiders use it to calculate relevance in comparison to other sites.

I agree that the background is a good one for this page....
on my screen, the word HOME PAGE (ok, jaybee - 2 words..lol) is barely at the bottom and the "content" is beneath that..one could almost miss it!!!!

I like what you have done but would redisgn..get that nav on the right or left and bring your content up higher..... nice logo but too much real estate invested in logo area......

good job

Thanks for all the input so far! It's really helping me see what I need to do to improve the overall look and purpose of the site.

Of course after July 15 I'll remove the banner ad for the Ugly Necklace contest, bringing the content back up closer to the top.
(I hope everyone goes & votes... for Kate, of course) :)

Guess I better head back into the Beginning Web Design forum as I have many Q's and much to learn... Thanks again! John
