A PhotoShop Question - 6/21/2004 18:20:30
I have suffered a brain lapse.

I once knew this, but I clearly developed an olde age problem... perhaps some PS guru can refresh my memory. For the life of me... I cannot recall how I once did this.

When I publish a transparent GIF created in PS 6.01 and it is used against a background color, there are tiny splotches of white surrounding the letters. I THOUGHT this was an aliasing problem, but regardless of the setting there, the tiny splotches still show through. How much they show through depends on the background color... some have more... some less. Obviously it looks perfect against a white background, but my application calls for it to appear against three different backgrounds. Tan, light blue (gradient) and green. The print in the GIF is black.

Anyone able to assist me?

Thanks in advance!

Can you upload the gif so we can take a look?

If I understand you correctly, the first question that comes to mind, is there a drop shadow? If so, you'll have to select a mat color the same as the background when you Save As; in your case, you'll need to save three different gifs with three different bground mat colors.

to exapand a little: alternatively have three different psd versions all set on the appropriate colour canvas/background so that the print is anti-aliased against the correct colour or so the psd is just set on a tranpsarent background and then choose the correct background colour in the matte option when you save for web.

Sorry... my fault for not being clear.

There can be only one copy of the .GIF on the server. There is no provision for three different .GIF's to be called. If there were, I would have just done that, but I didn't express myself clearly in my post.

There IS a way to eliminate this problem, I just can't remember how I did it before, and I was hoping someone could shed some light on this for me. This is a common problem with GIF's but photoshop does have a way of dealing with it.

This must be a transparent .GIF as it will be called on at least three and maybe four backgrounds.

I can send the .GIF, but that will not help you. The .GIF looks perfect and you would have to publish it against various backgrounds to see the problem.

If anyone recalls how to deal with this, please add your post.

Many thanks

TG

so... assuming you can't have blueb.gif, redbg.gif etc there is no way to use a gif on more than one different background without running the risk of the 'halo' (i.e. loose pixels that standout at the edges.

it can only be antialised against one colour per gif.
you could use a gif without antialiasing (IF it will look ok but i doubt it very much)

or use a png with alpha transparency, but that won't work because IE doesn't support png transparency.

the answer is to use 3 different gifs or failing that put up with the halo, or use the same background colour

Forget making the gif transparent. What I do is have 2 layers one for my background colour I want to match the text up with, and the other is my image. Just make your background layer the same colour as the background you want to put that image up against.

I wrote a tutorial a month ago on this issue. Check it out, and let me know what you think.

It should work. I do have that port forwarded. I'm currently downloading and uploading quite a bit, so that might be the reason why it didn't load up for you. Unfortunately I am running my site off my main computer, using win xp IIS server, and my comps always in use.

works from home!
you don't achieve anything your way - it still requires 3 different gifs, antialiased against 3 different backgrounds.

to recap: to use ONE gif to look perfect on three different background. you can either:

- use a bitmpap font with antialiasing turned off on a transparent background

- use your one gif antialiased against a happy medium somewhere between all 3 backgrounds (maybe a light/medium grey) , but you WILL end up with some stray pixels/halo effect due to the very nature of antialsing against a background that isn't a perfect match.

- use 3 gifs. which you say you can't (but why?)

Ya I see what you mean. i mis-read the last part about needing to have to blend with 3 backgrounds at once. I was assuming it was the usual problem with one background.
