SEO Experiment - 6/23/2004 16:29:04
Hi guys, I have been working on a few theories to test exactally what makes google tick now. I have a few dozen number ones that I planned, a few dozen that I didnt and am struggling on a lot of other terms I used to be high ranked for. I have the feeling that google is filtering my searches as if I include a -zxcvbnmlkjhgfdsa at the end of my search terms my site seems to appear close to the top, if I dont filter out bogus words then I am in the 30's & 40's.

I have come to the conclusion after doing extensive research that google is now using both localrank(1) and experrank(2) technology. These definitions didnt come out of a dictionary so if you can shead light on the please do.

1) Localrank: Relates to how you link to your pages internally and how important they are to your sites. For example most do a search for your site in google with the site: comman, is the important page in the top 10?

2) Expert Rank: Relates to how the other websites within the top in google for your term(s) link to you and how you link to them. It seems to be more important for you to link to them as it is called the WWW and not the WWI (Web not Islands). It also seems to be related to how your site links to auhority sites (ie: PR9 & PR10's) but they must be relevent sites, linking to WW3 standards, google & yahoo isnt that good, however linking to your regional google for example google.com.au is good.

For my experiment I have decided to use an already well visited by google forum on my website called Bargin Hunter I have created some new topics, some where there already, and have posted links to authority websites around my own links. Has anyone else tried a similar experiment? Can I see it and did it have any effect? Does anyone else have any other ideas on how to restore lost rankings?

Alan: I assume those were not typos when you said link to other sites.... everything I read vis-a-vis Google is that they place the importance uopn who links to you; not who you link to..Their premise is that the important sites will have people pointing to them.... those who do the pointing are not the important ones; just the faces in the crowd saying: there is the expert.

The received wisdom is that with Google it's better to receive than to give. After all, if it were the other way around, people would display arbitrarily large numbers of links to other sites to boost their ratings.
