A VERY in depth Access Database question... - 6/24/2004 10:25:34
Hi all, I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I need a bit of help with an Access Database. Further to this I may be able to implement the same in MySQL.

Ok, here goes:

I play for a local badminton team and am a representative of my badminton league. For the past two years I've provided them with an Excel spreadsheet that they can use to update results etc. and then publish the results tables to a file which I then upload. See www.thebdbl.org.uk for clarification of this (in the results section.)

I haven't committed to anything at the minute, but do you think it would be feasible to make a database solution containing all of the results/fixtures and then having the ability to submit results online? The task is complex and I can't quite get my head round it.

Maybe using the following entities:

CLUB(ClubName)
CLUBTEAM(ClubTeamNumber,DivisionName,ClubName,TeamName)
DIVISION(DivisionName)
RESULTS(ResultNumber,HomeTeam,AwayTeam,FixtureDate,HomeRubber,AwayRubber,HomeDefaultRubber,AwayDefaultRubber,ReArranged,NewFixtureDate,Completed,Void)

I need something that will collate results etc. something much like the footy league tables, but with multiple divisions!

Any ideas?

Mark

Unless I'm misunderstanding, this should be reasonably simple. At high level...

  • Just build a form for the users that will post to your Access DB. You can get more information on how to do that here.
  • But you will need security to assure not just anyone posts to the DB. You could use something really simple, like this, but I really suggest you use the Spooky Login. You will find it performs quite a few functions you will use.
  • Your user's login information can be used in the form to constrain them from only entering information to their team's records.

Is this on the right track for what you are wanting to accomplish?

Hi Andrew, thanks for the reply.

It is, in a way. I just need help setting up the initial database! Wondered if anyone had any ideas. I can send you the spreadsheet if you like, I just need that converting to a database format.

I'll help you get started with an Access DB with sample input and output pages. I can't promise, but I should have a few minutes this weekend to do something and send to you.

I think you will want the Spooky Login to handle security. You may want to go ahead and get a copy and start learning what it does.

I'll send you a PM with my e-mail address. Go ahead and send me your spreadsheet.

    Andrew

Thanks, much appreciated! I think I'll only be viewing the pages locally so there will be no need for security. I'll just install a PWS on the person's computer and run the pages from there. Thanks Andrew, there's no rush so don't put yourself out if you have work to do. Any time is fine, Mark
