pimpernel -> Two URLS, one site (6/25/2004 16:15:49)

Hoping someone can provide an answer please. Hopefully this is the correct forum for my question?

My current site is .com and I have just renewed the domain and my hosting package (both purchased at same time from same company) Before setting that up I did purchase the matching co.uk domain from another source for two years but so far I have not used it. It is currently 'PARKED'. lol

As I am in process of designing a replacement .com site I wonder if it is possible to perhaps use the other domain to point to the new site or is this frowned upon by SEOs?

If permitted... how do I set it up please?

Cheers

You can do that no problem.

There will be a problem however if you have two domains pointing to identical sites.

DMOZ editors will kill mirror sites. They will also only allow one entry per site so if you submit to them make sure you pick your best domain and ignore the other one.

I use 123-reg.co.uk to purchase and "park" some of my domain names. They offer a free "web forwarding" service where you can direct one domain name to another. I thought that as long as you only have the one site, then you could have as many other domain names as you want forwarding to that site without causing the search engines any problems on the original domain. It's just that the addittional domain names won't be spidered because they don't exist as sites.

If this is wrong I would appreciate some guidance as this could seriously affect my plans for my company's website.

You can and redirects work fine but don't submit more than one domain name to DMOZ. I'll mail you some info.

To clarify mirror sites

two identical, or near identical sites with different domain names pointing to each.

Spamming from the editor based search engine point of view is when you submit one site over and over with different domain names.
