Help! How Should I Price This? - 6/27/2004 13:17:56
Hello All,

Hope you can help me price out the below request. I've done a few sites, always on request, always charging and being paid what I asked. I don't design for a living yet the possibility exists for an income stream when and if a couple of other business ventures and my golf game don't interfere.

I recognize that the "Easy Update" section will require a form of content management which I think I can accomplish with inline frames/asp FP editor. Also, the "Map" will require hotspots which shouldn't be a problem. I am concerned that this "would-be client" is not is not giving me the whole picture yet expects me to quote a price by e-mail which I will then be bound by.

Would appreciate your help in quoting this "job" as a range what I should charge based on what he's said and what little I've been able to pass on here. This would be for the design work itself; outside costs not to be considered are Custom Company Logo (if any), Hosting, Domain Registration and subsequent site maintenance. My feel for it is in the $900 - $1100 range but I could be off either way.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
I am starting a pest control company in the area. I recently moved from Charleston. I will have 2 employees besides myself. I want a website.

Some of the things I want are:
An easy to update “news” section. I do not want to have to learn programming to do the updates.
A map of the Greenville area to show when treatments are done in a particular area.
A short “about us” section
A way for a potential customer to contact us.
Information about the products we use. (I’ll supply the info) Links to pest related sites.
I think that should be about 6 pages. Can you give me a general idea of the cost. I will not hold you to the penny, but I have to know if this is feasible for us>>

Larry: I wouldnt jump to the conclusion of "hot spots" for the map..those can be a pain. you could simply color code sections with an adjoining legend. anyway....

seems to me, you have answered your own question: he asks for a range and you have a range "$900-$1100". As long as you outline what you tend to provide in that range and maybe even specify some things that would make additional charges, there shouldnt be a problem. This section:

puzzles me....maybe I am naive but I dont see anything in his post that would make ME suspicious of him not giving the whole picture - seems straitforward to me.

You have answered your own question here. Personally, I would be charging a bit more due to the fact that client wants a CMS, but that's by the by.

He also states he won't hold you to the penny, so, if he says too much, offer to do the "job" in phases. Or, say he can pay it off in monthly payments (with interest of course).

Larry,
For a small set up I think that is rather a good brief; I have usually had something like:-

"We want a website"
Yes, what do you want on it?
"Oh...we'll leave that to you. How much will it cost?"

I agree with the others, this looks legit and your range sounds about right.

I've hd a better third line than that lol:

"I dunno, what can we have? and How Much?"
:):)

Thanks very much to all who responded to my pricing question.

I did price this as a range - $1000 - $1250, telling him what was included and what was not plus the estimated development time. Heard not a word.

By bouncing this off the Forum I knew I was in the ballpark, so what I've learned is to quote and take business on my (reasonable) terms or not at all. Actually feel pretty good about this whole exercise.

Thanks again!

Larry, he may be off getting other quotes - like we all should do for all kinds of work.

Especially for building work :)
Cheers
Carol
