Login problems - 7/6/2004 0:51:56
Howdy! Newbie to the forums, old man to the 'net. Been using FP for quite a few years now, in some interation or another. Am having a problem. I've searched the FAQ's, and searched the Forums with no answer to my question. Also, took me a while to hunt this place up on the 'net. I also hope this is the right forum to be posting this to. OK, now with all that out of the way, on to my problem:

I maintain a number of websites, through various hosts for various reasons. All are on shared hosting systems. Yeah, I know, not the best, but $$$ counts.

Things had been going well, until...one day, I couldn't get into 2 of my sites via FP. These 2 sites are hosted by the same company as well. This company is NOT very helpful. Well, in attempting to login to these 2 sites, I noticed the "Realm" portion of the login screen was blank. Now, when I get onto my other sites, there is/was something there. So I contact the company, they said the following:

"Check the server setting you have in FP. If you have it set to an IP address,
then that is the problem. The server just changed IP addresses, and you'll need
to use the new one: 69.72.197.138

If that doesn't work, just let me know."

Well, I let them know, and NO response. So, I'll probably be switching hosts as well. But the domain name will stay the same. How can I "reset" this, so it'll work? How would I/did I/can I set it to an IP address?

ANY help???

Thanks in advance, and nice resource y'all got here!!!

PS Any Nissan truck owners out there???

Welcome To Outfront

I take it all the webs are on domains etc, and paid hosts? Try logging into the Online Control Panel for the webs, and re-install the FPSE.

You should really connect via the domain name. But this is basically, when you go to Open the site Live, through FP, just enter http://69.72.197.138 instead of the domain.

Transfering domains is easy, some hosts will do it for you, at a fee mind. The new host will give you DNS servers for the domain, and all you have to do is set the domain to that, you should have full access to the domain control panel too.

Well, this sounds like the same problem I have. I get a blank "realm" when logging in and this just happened out of the blue. I have tried reinstalling FPSE several times via cpanel to no avail. I still can't do > openweb and access my website. I've been trying to get the server guy to help me fix it, but he is not up on FP2002.

Also, by reading other threads I see I need to save to hard drive and publish from hard drive...instead of "working live" to the server when making changes but I can't access the server to get things rolling in the right direction.

Please help...thanks! Ditto on the great resource forum for FP! :)

I dont know the answer to your problem but I do want to comment on the quote above. I cannot imagine making changes live to a site and not also saving them to my hard drive. That puts you 100% at the mercy of your host!!! (even if you are the host)... I want complete copies locally which I then backup to other media. Therefore, I never evernever work live..i make changes locally and then update (publish if i use fp, ftp if i hand code)
