Need to make avi smaller - 7/15/2004 21:22:58
I have a 4 minute video I made with my son's little cheap digital blue video camera (4 minutes is the most it can take). The file, however, turned out to be 35mb. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to reduce the size for web viewing? Also, I have been real confused by the whole embed / object tags for placing my video in a web page. As it turned out, I inserted the via the insert..picture...video menu.. I am wondering if this is why it takes so long to load online. I may be trying to do things the hard way. Any suggestions??

The easy way is to make the movie a link that opens in a new window. One problem you have ran into is the file size. Well if it is already 35MB, you will not be able to compress it down much more than that to make an actual difference. You have already limited your audience down to people who have fast connections, so if they already have a connection that fast, why not just leave it at the size it is now? If you try to compress it you will lose a lot of quality. If you want to compress it anyways, look for .avi compression on google.

There are actually several ways you can reduce the file size. Avi files are larger in file size than many other formats that can be used for viewing on a web page, sush .wmv for Windows Media Player, or MPEG which plays in several players. Microsoft offers a Windows Media Encoder as a free download. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx It can be used with an avi file, to make an out put file for windows media player, a .wmv file. The compression usually does not reduce the quality as you can adjust the settings to match your choice of file size vs quality. I have compressed a 200+mb avi file to a 5mb .wmv file Another free Microsoft product is the Windows Movie Maker. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/default.mspx I believe the Movie Maker can also encode as an mpeg file. I'm not totally positive on that one, as I've only ever made the wmv files. Flash is another option. You can import the .avi file and output as .swf at a much smaller file size. But Flash as a program is not something most people have, and is quite expensive. I don't think the methods you have used are affecting the download time. The size of the original avi file is the problem. Try some of the above options, and you should be able to reduce the file size so that even your site visitors with dialup can view the file. Hope this helps. Nancy
