Making JPG's Smaller - 7/18/2004 23:32:25
Hi All,

I have developed a web site for a construction company that uses pop-ups w/slide shows for the examples of their work. (www.abcodevelopment.com/restaurant.htm)

The problem I am having is that the slide shows are a little buggy until the images are loaded completely. I am thinking that making the JPG's the smallest files size possible would be a good start to fixing this.

However, I can not seem to get them lower than 38kb without losing major clarity!! I am using PhotoShop 5.0 - is there a method I do not know about concerning getting lower file sizes? I saved the images at a number 5 any lower and they get a little distorted and the file size only lowers by a couple of kb's anyways! Any advice or suggestions on lowering JPG file sizes?

Thanks for your time.

Rita

You could make your images actually smaller - they don't need to be that large - make them around 400 pixels max width and they'll still be pretty large. I would even venture to go smaller and crop out any extra stuff that isn't the actual subject, where appropriate.

On my real estate sites the images are about 200 x 300, which is large enough to get the point across, though you might want larger than that.

You'll have to actually resize the images in Photo shop, not just declare them smaller in your HTML. Also check your resolution that it's 70 dpi which is appropriate for the web (I've done lower res for the heck of it and didn't lose any quality but interestingly it didn't make the file size smaller)
