I need Tech help! FP2000 won't open!! - 7/21/2004 13:43:00
Hello there,
I'm new to this forum. I'm having some trouble with my FrontPage 2000. :) For about 3 days now I haven't been able to open this program. When I do try, a error message pops up saying this: Microsoft FrontPage application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. It also says that the following file is included in the error report - C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER34A.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

I have tried to unistal the program and reinstall it hoping it would work but to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem is and if not do you know another forum that I may get technical assistance? Thank you so much for you help:)

Welcome to Outfront!

Try searching your system for "appcompat.txt". This is a temporary file and it shouldn't be found. If it is, you need to remove it and try opening FP again.

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem and can't find the "appcompat.txt" file to delete. I am going crazy with this one!!! Did you find a solution?

Hi Rubbish and welcome to OutFront!

Are you getting the exact same error message? Did you search all folders and files for the file in question?

I'm searching the Microsoft site but I haven't found anything else to suggest. I'll let you know if I find anything.

Guest & Rubbish,

A puzzle why this file can't be found since the error message stipulates an exact path statement. Perhaps a Hidden File?

You can find and delete this file by: >>right clicking Start >>Start Menu, then typing the complete appcompat.txt path statement on the Address Bar.

Also, try Disk Cleanup by clicking Start, >>All Programs, >>Accessories, >>System Tools, and then >> Disk Cleanup. I also suggest a complete Defrag followed by a cold restart.

Let me transform this to it's true state:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\WER34A.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

Larry is correct when he says Hidden Folder. Local Settings are, by default, hidden from the user, as they hold information about your local login details etc.

Tools>>Folder Options>>View and select the radio button "Show Hidden Files And Folder" Makle sure you apply to all folders, then browse to the directory stated above, find your file, and delete it. Cold Restart of the machine
