Ques about linking to subweb - 7/22/2004 3:18:32
Big time newbie here. I have searched hi and low and cant seem to find a solution. I'll ty to be concise.

Have a web published etc. Using nav bar to navigate pages on this web. Works great.

Have created a subweb ( a whole other site as I understand it). Have published that as well. At least the main page.

Now I am trying to link the first to the second. Using info found here I created a new object in nav view of the first web in FP. R click select add existing page and point it to the main page of the sub web. Seemed simple enough. Worked, sort of. Link takes me to subweb ok but the nav bar on the main page of the primary web is missing labels. When I publish the primary web from my pc to the web I get this message.

Server error: '/subweb/_overlay.index.htm_nav_jam1010_vbtn.gif' does not refer to a page or folder in this web. It may be a page or folder in a subweb, or it could be a badly formed URL

As a result some of the labels on the main web ar not present on the nav bar.

Any help in resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Woof,

Sounds like more than one set of interrelated problems, but a publishing error to begin with.

A main site when published in FrontPage should look like this: www.mainsite.com/. A subweb (subsite in FP2003) when published in FrontPage should look like this: www.mainsite.com/subweb.

You are correct that a subweb is an entirely different site than the main site which may or may not share common features of the main site.

First things first, what steps did you take when you published the subweb?

Hi Larry,

the main site is published to www.mainsite.com. The subweb I published to www.mainsite.com/subweb.
When I didi it I actuallky chose publish then typed in that as the address I wanted it published to.

Is that what you wanted to know?

Woof,

OK, you did that right. The problem then has to be here:

<<Using info found here I created a new object in nav view of the first web in FP>>

Tell us what Outfront Forum info you relied on and what specific steps you took. I don't think main sites can navigate or "talk" internally to subwebs. As far as I know, this is done by post-publishing linking only. Could be wrong though.

I believe you are correct, Larry. That is the whole point of the sub web - its distinct and different/not a part of the other web. you would link to it the same way you link to any other site on the web - not thru the nav structure which is designed to creates links wihtin a web. I could be wrong but then there would be 2 of us..<smile>

Woof,

Whether caused by erroneous information or faulty interpretation of good information, Dan and I both zeroed in on and think this is your problem.

Hope you have a good backup of the main site since the only way I know of to get it back up is to delete all server files (overwriting has mixed results) and republish.

Woof,
If I understand what you are doing correctly
You can put a FP type link from a main web to a sub web but you must use a feature available on FP2002 and above.
Insert/ Web Component/ Link Bars/ Bars with custom links
You can use this component to add a additional navigation button under? your existing navigation the main site
I usually put a full url path in this link (http://www.mainsite.com/subweb/)
Good luck

Larry & dpf, thanks for the tip. Something was corrupted. I deleted the web from the server and republished. Still had the corruption. I had to recreate the site's navigation completely but after publish it was working fine. Republished the sub and it good too thanks.

Kgiles, that was exactly the tip I was looking for. The link now works exactly the way I wanted. Thanks very much.

I appreciate everyones time and effort. Thanks.
