Death announcement etiquette? - 7/29/2004 9:51:07
I work for a small, privately owned business and our company founder, retired for several years, has passed away. Several of our customers have inquired as to whether we were going to post information on our website regarding his passing. Is this appropriate? We have prepared a press release and distributed it to the periodicals pertaining to our customers' types of businesses. Any insights are appreciated.

It depends on the circumstances; If he was well known and respected by a number of your current customers then I would say that you need to do something purely on commercial grounds to reassure your customers that the company cared about the man who started it.

If he was not particularly well known then there is no commercial reason for doing it but I think it's a nice thing to do.

A web site is more permanent than the periodicals, and you have to think of what you do several months down the line; you don't want to be seen to be permanently mourning. So I suggest that you do two things 1) have a short biog page which you leave on permanently with a nice picture and info on how he started the business and who he was.
2) put a simple message on your intro page with a link to the biog page. This message should probably be taken off after a few months.

Whatever you do IMHO it's best to leave religion out of it and don't overdo the tears and sorrow bit - keep it factual, deferential and if possible bright and upbeat - celebrate the good things in his life.
