What's a billable hour? - 8/3/2004 16:06:51
Ok, here we go. I would like others input on this one. If we charge say 60$ and hour what does that hour include? I call "billable hours" time that is exclusively spent on a project or part of a project. It might take 4 hours of trial and error, learning, research, bathroom breaks, slow connections, checking the email, dumping the graphic filter effect, reboot the computer. yadda yadda yadda.. to come up with 1 billable hour. Is this right or do you all start at the top of the hour and have to deal with these interruptions and claim it on the clients billable hour? Thanks for your input. Deb Mc

interesting..I asked an attorney friend the same question..with almost the same list... especailly learning, trial and error, research. I told him I used a standard of "if I ought to know it and dont and have to study it, that shouldnt be billable, right?" Proving himself an excellent attorney, his answer was "yes and no". <smile> his point was this:"look, Ive been practicing 15 yrs - 6 as a prosecutor and 9 as a defense attorney so I "ought" to know it all, right? wrong! Every case is different and I have to do research (i.e. learning) and that is billable. when you say checking email -is that general business email or answering the customers email? if customers, I bill - if not, I dont. Lasr spring, I got a contract with a company to maintain and improve their 3 web sites - each of which was done by a different ad agency and they loked nothing alike. I billed 9 hours (3 @) to "study and familiarize myself with file structure and code". They never complained. Potty breaks arent billable so (as my wife says) hurry, scurry and urry.

Thanks again Dan, for your input here. I would expect that large companies with a high advertising department would not take issue with this approach and even expect it, but then there is the bike shop owned by Mom & Pop, you know the one :-) that looks at the web as something they know they have to have but really can't afford. Bottom line I think is what you say, every case is different and just needs to be taken into account certain variables. Thanks again, it's nice ot have a friend in business here at Outfront because I don't have any one else to bounce this stuff off of! Ta, Deb
