A new site to critique - 8/10/2004 11:08:53
Hey all,

I'd be delighted to receive any feedback at all on my new site:
http://www.transactionalview.org/

Which I'm aiming to make as accessible and high pageranking as possible...

Great, and thanks in advance,
Dan Palmer

Very linear. Very clinical.

I'm assuming that's what your going for.

Thanks for the comment. Actually, I'm all for non-linear and non-clinical (is "vibrant" the opposite of clinincal?). This is just how it fell together so far.

Any suggestions for how I might move towards a more non-linear, non-clinical layout?

Best,
Dan

It's very, white. Inject a bit of colour in there, if you've got a fixed-width table for your content, centre it and add a solid background. The footer appears 'confused' as it's a larger width than the header.

The CSS rollovers are nice, I'll give you that one.

I like to see hyperlinks with underlines, kind of an accessibility thing, with a hover colour too.

Your logo can be improved, needs to be a bit more modern IMO.

You have good content too, it just needs to be highlighted, I'd go for a standard layout of; header, navigation, content, footer. Fixed-width with a purple background, the main table would be 750px wide, no top or bottom margin.

It definitely can be improved, if you need more help post back, I'd be happy to assist you further.

Regards,

Hey Mark,

Thanks a bunch for your comments. I'm very keen to try your suggestions out, and so far have put back the link underlines and added a hover color.

You're right about the ('cheap and nasty') logo which I eventually hope to improve. Can you recommend a software program for this kind of stuff? What does IMO mean?

I take it you mean adopt a standard table-based layout for the index and other pages (and do you mean a horizontal navigation bar?). Right now I only use a table for the homepage. But I like the idea of embedding the content in a table with a purple background and will hopefully get time to give it a try tomorrow.

Cheers and thanks again,
Dan

You could use Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro, or, if you need something tailored I can do something for you if you like. I tend to use Photoshop, although sometimes it's not always necessary to use such an expensive program!

IMO = In My Opinion, stops a barrage of angry comments directed at an opinion!

True, I think that'd work well, your site's kind of confused beween a horizontal and vertical navigation bar. If you're feeling adventurous, consider formatting your table with CSS, it's much easier to customise. I can help if you like, or go to www.w3schools.com to read up on it. Also a good place for creating layouts is http://www.csscreator.com/version2/pagelayout.php which actually creates a properly formatted CSS and XHTML compliant layout.

A good few updates there, well done.

I'm glad the comments have helped open your eyes a bit,
