You will need to backup all of the plugins that you are using on these sites, and then the theme that is being used.

Afterwards, you can simply copy the web and paste it onto the new harddrive.

acker1,

Using the new compter, visit the site on the Internet using Internet Explorer, chose Edit With Microsoft FrontPage from the file menu. Publish the entire site to a new folder on your new hard drive. You will need to respond "Yes" to making the new folder a Web folder, and its ok that your computer has no FrontPage Server Extensions installed.

Everything that was on the server is now on your new computer—nothing lost—nothing gained.

I guess I also need to install Frontpage and when I get ready to do an update, will everything fall into place? Yeah, like that would happen! LOL Or would everything end up like it is on my old puter? Sorry for the dumb questions but I was/am completely lost on this transfer to be ready to use as on the old puter.

Not sure what you mean, I haven't downloaded anything else to use in FP. Just what came with the program. So if I install the program all the things I need should be there?
Have patience please--I'm an old fart!
Maybe a quick look at my site would help you see how simple I keep it.

You will need this theme:
<meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="strtedge 011, default">
<meta name="Microsoft Border" content="tl, default">

If you can burn a cd, make a ZIP file of your current website, and copy that onto a CD.

If you try and copy some FP web sites onto a cd directly, some of their long file names cannot be written onto the cd, and then it requires you to renamed them.

Once you have the zip file on a cd, put it in the new computer, unzip it, and view it. If everything looks perfect, then open it with frontpage.

Charles W Davis -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/16/2004 12:16:36)

acker1,

Since your original question was how to transfer FrontPage files to a new computer, I assumed that you would be using FrontPage on the new compurer. On this assumption, the process in my post above will bring you the most positive results without tedius renaming and possible failure to bring everything last bit across. No ZIP files to create.—just Publish.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/16/2004 12:22:52)

Only problem with that is sometimes the web won't fully come over with the shared bordera ect. If you search on the forum for 'import web' you will find that the import web wizard fairly works, and a somewhat better solution that works more than the import web feature, but still not best, is to open the site in FP and publish it to your hard drive.

You could try that first, if it works then it saved you some time.

dpf -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/16/2004 15:09:39)

i had good luck in the past simply copying files over to a new pc (with fp installed) but then again i never used shared borders or themes.

Charles W Davis -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/16/2004 21:08:26)

BobbyDouglas,

The Import Wizard will not import pages that require FPSEs correctly. It was designed to import files into webs, not sites.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/16/2004 21:53:08)

Ah. That I didn't know.

Has Open Website Remotely > Publish to Hard Drive

Always worked for you?

Charles W Davis -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/16/2004 22:01:13)

BobbyDouglas,

It has for the 20 or so times that I have had to use it. Three years ago, my hard drive went south, and at that time I was involved with maintaining 12 sites. All 12 published to the hard drive successfully. A year before that, my computer was the victim of a power surge and had to Publish only 9 sites to the hard drive.

With being able to Edit with Microsoft FrontPage option on the File menu, it is simple to set up.

Just yesterday, I inadvertantly deleted a whole flock of images while browsing with Photoshop. I thought the open folder was one under MyPictures, but unfortunately it was the images folder in my web site. Open live, and Publish to the hard drive saved the day.

acker1 -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/16/2004 22:17:04)

Charles W Davis--
Thanks, would it make any difference when I loaded FP? Before or after I publish to a new folder. And when I went to add to the page it would find it and do it correctly? Or do I need to get it back into FP somehow?
I just went to my page in IE and on the file dropdown it doesn't have "edit with Microsoft FrontPage". Current puter 98SE, IE ver 6, New puter will have XP--would that be the difference?
DICK

Charles W Davis -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/16/2004 22:58:30)

acker1,

FrontPage need not be open. It may be that your File drop down menu is not showing all options, if there is a chevron near the bottom of the list click on the chevron to display all of the options. When all are displayed the "Edit with Microsoft Office FrontPage...." should be the third in the list, after New and Open.

acker1 -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/17/2004 19:16:54)

Charles--
I double checked the 'file' dropdown in IE and it's not there and there is no chevron to extend the list. Possibly something I need to set up? There is an 'import & export' in the list. Or possible it will show up on XP when I get the new puter? I don't need to download it to this puter.

Charles W Davis -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/17/2004 19:43:05)

acker1 a.k.a. Dick,

It will most certainly be on a new Windows based computer.

Alternatively, you can open FrontPage and post the URL of your site in the location to open your web site and it should open. Then you can Publish it to your hard drive. That's the way that I used to do it every time.

I dreamed up that slogan without thought to a motor home. I did however create and maintain a web site for an RV outfit in central California that sold those models.

Acadia -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/17/2004 23:16:27)

I just burn "My Webs" folder to a CD and then reinstall to a new computer or back to the desk top after a reformat.

Also, you can always retrieve the web from the net too. I FTP mine down (I FTP it up too). And for one at Geocities where FTP'ing isn't possible, I got "Black Widow", which grabbed the web for me and downloaded it to my machine without a problem.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/18/2004 2:26:34)

I just burn "My Webs" folder to a CD and then reinstall to a new computer or back to the desk top after a reformat.
- When a filename is too long, most cd burning software will require you to change the name. Once you change that name, the FP web will not longer work. That is why I said zip the web first (so it will keep the long file names). But it seems like what Charles was saying works a lot easier for a smaller amount of backups.

Charles W Davis -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/18/2004 11:51:12)

acadia,

FTP won't be successful if the web site uses any FrontPage Server Extension. You must Publish in these cases.

acker1 -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (8/19/2004 21:10:48)

Thanks to all. Puter is due to arrive next mon. I'll play with it a few days to learn about XP, then see what happens with my transfer. I'll keep you posted.

acker1 -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (9/11/2004 1:31:05)

Got the new puter and then had my satellite internet go down. (still down) Phone was terrible (26,400) now I'm using my bro-in-laws wireless. So I'm ready to transfer my website. Went to FILE and 'edit' is grayed out so I can't download the site that way. I loaded my FP install disk and looked again and still gray.
Not sure what to do now. Sure would like to get all that stuff on this new puter.
I read back thru the previous posts and still not sure. I do have memory & concentration problems and that sure doesn't help. :>)
Thanks
DICK

Make sure the File drop down menu that you are referring to is the one in Internet Explorer—not FrontPage.

acker1 -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (9/11/2004 17:22:20)

Charles--
Thanks for replying. I double checked the page and I am trying it in IE and there are no chevrons and the edit is grayed out. Is there a setting that can identify the site with my puter so 'edit' will be available to me? It isn't available to me on my old laptop either and that's the one I have been using for my site from day one.

Charles W Davis -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (9/11/2004 21:44:21)

acker1

Is the "new computer" new or just new to you? Windows XP? IE 6? What release of FrontPage?

acker1 -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (9/12/2004 18:19:00)

Hi,
New computer is a new Sony Vaio K-27 laptop with XP.
FrontPage 2000, version: 4.0.2.3821
IE 6

Old computer is a Sony Vaio PCG-540 w/98SE
IE 6

Thanks

Charles W Davis -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (9/12/2004 22:23:59)

acker1,

Been a while since I have used FP 2000.

Open FrontPage. In place of a web site on your computer enter the URL for your site in the Location. FrontPage should then contact the server and ask for you user name and password. Once the site is open, then Publish (selecting Publish all files) it to your hard drive. When you state the folder on your hard drive, you will first be asked that the folder is not a web folder and whether you wish it to be changed, respond YES. You will get the usual notfication that there are no Server Extensions installed. It is OK to not have them on your computer.

acker1 -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (9/12/2004 22:56:37)

Charles--
I don't understand this part: "In place of a web site on your computer enter the URL for your site in the Location."

I opened FP and didn't see anything like "location". Maybe I'm misreading what you are saying. I appreciate your help.

acker1,

I finally found my PF 2000 book, see if this image will get you started.

acker1 -> RE: transfer FRONTPAGE 2000 files to new puter (9/30/2004 16:50:59)

Charles--
I couldn't figure how to use that page. I had to take a trip to SC and while there my son-in-law came over and suggested this: CuteFTP.
He helped me thru it and we got it transferred to new puter. He changed a name somewhere in the process so I'm hoping it will still post correctly on next update. Just thought I would pass this along in case it could help someone else.
I went to your website and noticed you were born in Mattoon, Il. We are currently in Effingham, Il (Wife's hometown) which is 30 miles south of Mattoon.
Thanks for all your help and I'm sure I'll be back for more help! LOL
DICK
