dhammer -> can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/16/2004 15:00:18)

Hello, I am trying to publish my site for the first time. I have read through many pages of posts already to see if my problem was up there, but I don't see it. So here is my first post:
I get prompted that frontpage extensions are not installed when I try to publish. They have been installed and reinstalled by the server host. (this is the second host that I am using, it didn't work with ipowerweb.com either but there were different error messages then)I have the correct url and I am not using ftp. Is it possible that the issue is with my frontpage 2000 and not the server? Could fp automatically be corrupting the frontpage extensions on the server somehow? I am using windows 2000.
Thank you for any assistance.
Dave

Dave: In my limited experience publishing with FP, I have never seen corrupted or absent extensions interfere with publishing - it will interfere with certain functionality working but not with publishing - I could be wrong.

Thanks Dan for responding,

I just got an email from my webserver to try again and now I am getting a different error message (however this is the same one from the other server which I cancelled) it says:
"The web server does not appear to have any authentication methods enabled. It asked for user authentication, but did not send a WWW-authenticate header."
It seems like on the servers end, everything looks great, they can't understand why I can't publish. Does anyone know how to resolve this error message?
Thanks Dave

FrontPage 2000 should be fine to publish with. I have seen that kind of thing happen when folks have their IE security settings set very high or when they're using a firewall. Could either of those problems be the culprit?

I have also seen it on Windows hosts when the host does not have basic authentication chosen.

dhammer -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/16/2004 18:53:06)

Thanks Tomas,
I tried to disable my firewall and publish but the same message still prompts me. I don't know what to change in IE for security settings. Settings seem to be set to medium level. I really feel the problem is with my machine somehow cause this is the 2nd windows host that this error is coming up on. I cancelled the first one, ipowerweb.com ,because I thought they messed up, but to get the same message with this new host too, makes me think that I'm the one with the problem.

Frontpage 2000 seems to be working perfectly, I can preview the pages in my browser, my default browser is netscape. Do you think that might make a difference?

Dave

Dan,

Apparently depends on the host, but experience tells me if you publish FrontPage files to a host without FrontPage Extensions any number of strange, and sometimes seemingly unrelated server responses can ensue.

Dave,

May not be. zip your files, send them to me by email as an attachment, and I'll publish them as a subweb to one of my sites. This will tell you if the problem is with your host (which I think it is) or your machine.

Can we have URL? It sounds like (1)Incomplete installation (2)No installation (3)A bad host

Dan,

Dave has been in touch with me by PM and will send his zip files so I can publish them as a subweb.

I think you are on track with your hosting related comments. We'll see, however.

Giomanach -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 7:21:11)

Larry

I just want to cover my bases before I give an answer. I want to check via sources other than the host's word to check if the FPSE are installed.

Thomas Brunt -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 9:01:05)

Do you have access to another computer on which you could install FrontPage and try connecting from there?

Thomas Brunt -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 9:03:29)

One more possbility is that your ISP may be blocking port 80. They will usually unblock it if you so request.

dhammer -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 9:40:25)

All,
I just emailed the file to Larry. Thomas, through the whole process of getting different prompts when I tried to publish, there was one message that mentioned just what you wrote about port 80. It doesn't come up anymore but it did once. I tried reinstalling frontpage, there were no errors with the installation. I am getting the same error message about "authentication" still. what if anything should I do about port 80?
Thanks,
Dave

Thomas Brunt -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 9:47:33)

You might want to call your internet access provider, and ask them if they are blocking that port. If so, ask them not unblock it.

dhammer -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 10:17:10)

I called my ISP- they are not blocking port 80. So since that message did come up once, I uninstalled my personal firewall. I still can't publish- same "authentication"message.

Can I have your URL...I want to check if the FPSE are installed from another source

Cheers

Thomas Brunt -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 10:27:18)

If your hosted on a Windows box, you might want to call your host and ask what kind of authentication they're using. I'm on a satalite connection, and I frequently have to get Windows hosts to switch to basic authentication so that I can connect.

G-
My domain name that I have set up is www.thespiritualjourney.org
No pages are on there because I can't publish, but if you could verify that for me that would be awesome. Thanks!

I will try to contact my host again about the authorization. I went with a cheap company that only responds to email. Although I have the same problem with ipowerweb.com too. They couldn't fix it.

Maybe this article might help?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242

It doesn't list FrontPage as a program that would have issues, but it does list Visual Studio. Last time I used that it had the same mechanism for publishing that FrontPage has.

Tom,

Dave's files published normally against a Windows 2003 server with FrontPage Extensions loaded Here

There is one server-side asp file which probably shouldn't be there given this site is (apparently) Dave's first effort and it may be causing the problems he is having. The name of the file is global.asa. Any ideas?

Giomanach -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 14:55:24)

Ok, checked the FPSE installation on Port 80 of your web and they are installed. I would do as Tom says and check the authorisation method used by the host

quote:

WWW Site: www.thespiritualjourney.org
Port: 80
Server Software: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
FrontPage Extensions: YES
Version: 5.0.2.2623

Source: dnswiz.com

Thomas Brunt -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 15:15:20)

I've never heard of global.asa causing any publishing problems, but I guess it's worth a try to not publish that file if it's not in use.

Since the site was successfully published somewhere then I would have to conclude that the issue is the authentication method used by the host. If that's it then you just need to ask them to switch the authentication method on your site to basic, and all will be well.

dhammer -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (8/17/2004 17:32:48)

[Hello All,
Thank you all so much for your assistance. I contacted my host and they said that there is no such provision as" basic authentication". They said they posted to the site and everything is fine. It seems to just be me that can't publish.
Since I am 0 for 2 with servers I can't imagine anything changing with another server. Thank you again for all your time. All of you have been such an amazing resource of suggestions and help.
Dave

you might try hosting here with Thomas......

Well...they aren't providing the service they should be. They are running M$ Windoze servers, therefore allowing for two basic types of authorisation: Basic and Windows Integrated. Basic allows more leverage, Windows Integrated requires secure authoriation....FP2002 and later me thinks.

I would change hosts here to Tom....very good prices..superb support....and it's on Linux Servers....so no authorisation problems....it's taking potential business away from me mind...but my hosting ain't set-up properly yet..

ewingr -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (7/4/2006 12:31:19)

I now all of a sudden are having this problem. I am hosting myself. My WEB server is in the other room. I'm using redirection from CJB.net.

So, I"m publishing from a computer with a 192.X.X.X address to the 192.X.X..X address behind my router.

This problem is new. I have published in the past. One think that I can think of, which didn't seem to be the problem based on this post, was my firewall software. I will try disabling that and see what happens and post back here.

Any other ideas?

Thomas Brunt -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (7/4/2006 14:17:59)

I have seen it happen that restoring IE security settings to defaults sometimes fixes problems like this.

ewingr -> RE: can't publish even though fp extensions are installed (7/7/2006 22:49:48)
