How to bring an already published site to FP - 8/19/2004 21:03:29
I am nervous about getting started with FP 2000, in that I have a site that is already published and I want to bring it into FP and make changes then republish. I open my web site through FP? go to File > Open Web > Type in my url (including http://) like this http://www.url.com > Open > Enter UserID and Password. then how do I set it up as a file to work with-- look at it before sending to site and then publish again to site when I feel it is ready. Can I do One page at a time or the whole site? It would be great if someone out there with lots of experience would offer there instruction on FP via phone or email for a few $$$. I could stand a verbal walk through to get me cranked.

I would try typing Import and then add in the URL from there. that way you are not editing live. It is a start. Eric

I wouldn't import the web at this point. I would publish down to your local machine first. With FP, open the site live, by going File>>Open Web, then, enter the URL of the website, enter your user name and password to log in. Now, select the file menu, and Click on Publish Site. This will give you your usual publish feature dialog. If using FP2003, you will want to select the very bottom option (can't remember the name MS have given it), otherwise, just type in a location on the local hard drive, and then hit publish. Then I would recommend you your import the web, via File>>Import. Dan

The real question is what did you use to create the existing site? Was it done in FP? Also, does your host have FP extensions installed? If "yes", then follow the tutorial link that Thomas provided to open the site live and then publish it down to your hard drive. If "no", do you have a copy of your site on your hard drive already? Good luck! Swirl

Once the extensions are applied, you can follow Thomas' tutorial. To be honest I would contain my curiosity and leave that zip file alone until you have got the current site off the web, just in case it causes further confusion. Once you know where you stand with the current version you can also publish from the web directly to your zip drive to have a regular back up on site. To clarify, the sequence is- 1.Publish from the web to FP on your c drive. to get your local copy. 2.Edit or add new stuff in FP on the C drive local copy. 3.Publish to the web. 4.Publish from the web to your zip drive to have a local back up copy. My normal work sequence is 2,3 and 4; zip drives are great for regular small back ups. Cheers Carol

To report progress- I found the new site (after web developer reformatted) site on my zip drive and when I opened it FrontPage must have grabbed it because FP is on the main page. When I open the other pages I don't see FP but on the Home page FP is sitting on it waiting to go to work. I'm scared. I feel like a baby with wobbly legs, I don't want to fall. So do I save this again somewhere as it is now and set that copy aside and use this one to import into FP to work with. So if I screw it up and can always go back to the site before I messed it up and start again. Right? or is there another way?

Sorry Caz, I was off looking at my zip drive when you left your message. I will follow your lead, if you think that is the better way to go than work with what is already on the zip. I at one time used an FTP to down load the site right after it's tranformation onto the zip. I'm not sure how I did it, but I did.

I don't recommend using import. If you have a web site in a folder. Just open that folder as a web in FP. File > Open Web > Use Look in dropdown box to locate the folder that contains your site. > double click to open that folder. You should then see a collection of other folders such as "images" > At that point, click the open button on the bottom right corner of the open web dialog. FP will tell you the folder you're opening is not a FP web and ask if you want FP to make it into one. Answer Yes.
