Change button color? - 8/20/2004 14:10:49
I have some ugly nav. buttons on my FPage templated site (Construction zone) that are dark gray with light gray text. They're not very readable. How can I change the button background or the text color on these nav. buttons. Go to www.cofcare.org/Solutions.htm to see what I mean. Thanks for any help.

Tom: it is actually 2 images..the mouseoff and mouse on. you need to import them into a graphics program such as paint shop pro et. al. and change colors there and resave

How can I do that while using a Front Page theme (Construction Zone)? Where would I find the graphic for the button?

You should have a folder "_derived" where your images reside

dpf, You didn't get that HTML code from one of my pages, did you. I'm looking for such a folder (_derived) but nothing like it. Maybe MS uses hidden folders in their templates? Tom

You can create your own buttons and then customize the theme that you are using.

Tom FP does have hidden folders. Go to tools/web settings/advanced tab and put a check in the "show documents in hidden folders" box. Swirl

(make sure you have apply theme to all pages selected so the changes are applied to all pages. You may want to “save as” a new theme so you can go back to original. Keith

As the folder is begining with an underscore "_" and I am assuming that you did not create this folder then this will be a hidden folder. If you wish to view hidden files & folders this settings can generally be found under "Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Hidden files and folders" select Show hidden files and folders. I would suggest unless you are confident in using the hidden folders be very carefull what you play around with as many of these folders are hidden for a reason & you could cause damage if you alter anything that is system critical (not trying to scare you, honest).

Do you have a graphics program? I'm guessing you're maybe going to Open, and since the files need to have a .htm extension the .gifs aren't showing. I could be wrong! Anyways, go to My Computer or Windows Explorer, look for that folder and you should see .gifs in there. What I'd suggest is copy them to another folder (not cut) as a backup, then open up a graphics program and edit the images in the _derived folder. That way there's no need to change filenames etc.

Something even easier that I did with Toms nav bars yesterday. I just went to his web page, right clicked and saved the picture as....in one of my folders. Then I opened it in PaintShop and cleaned it up and he could change the color at that time. You will have to save it as transparency because that is how it is on your web page. I would first copy the nav bars as they are NOW, to a separate folder in case you want to use them and then when saving the changed ones, use the same name and folder they are in now. I copied and pasted your page into my front page yesterday and played with the nav bars in PaintShop and it does work.

Wow, great responses! I'm readin an larnin. A few questions: In my _Themes folder I see three folders: 1. constuc, 2. copy2-of-construction zone, and 3. copy-of-construction zone. I guessed that my web is working out of the last one, #3 above, so I copied the urbglob.gif into my editor, Digital Image Pro 9, saved it to HDD as urbgloX.gif, went back to FP, and browsed to that gif and selected it. But it doesn't show on the pages. So, I conclude that my web is not using that copy of the theme. Now how do I identify which them folder I'm actually using and elim. the other two so things get simpler and begin to work for me. The whole process is fairly simple now that I can see how to get to the right image files. One thing also, I don't know how to identify the text file that places the name on top of the button I just edited - I want to change the font color if I can.

In html view or view source you will see <meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="copy2-of-construction-zone 011"> and you will see <a href="./"><img src="_derived/home_cmp_copy2-of-construction-zone010_gbtn.gif" width="95" height="20" border="0" alt="Home" align="middle"></a> it seems you are using copy2

RE: Change button color? - 8/23/2004 14:13:50
I feel really dumb. I went to HTML on the index.htm page in FP and see much code but not that string you described, but did find <meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="construc 011">. There is a Theme called construc under the _themes folder. So, can I assume that is the one that I am actually publishing and so can delete all the others? When I found the urbglob.gif, I changed it in my graphics program OK but it will not allow me to replace the one it uses with the new one. One other way, would be to change the text on the button but it does not allow for color changes, only size, type font. Is there another way?

RE: Change button color? - 8/23/2004 15:00:42
Hi Tom, Part of your problem may be this: The Solutions page shows it was contructed in: <meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="copy2-of-construction-zone 011"> That means you saved it in copy2. Your Home page shows it was constructed in: <meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="construc 011"> That means you saved it in the original construc 011 file. Your Contents page shows it was constructed in: <meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="copy-of-construction-zone 011, default"> This entirely different than the first 2 pages. Your "What is AEA was contructed in: <meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="copy3-construction-zone 011"> This is different than any of the 3 above. The Benefits page was constructed in: <meta name="Microsoft Theme" content="copy2-of-construction-zone 011"> So as you can see you have different pages in different files. I would suggest that you pick one file, make your art work and theme layout exactly how you want it, I would then rename this file as "Final Theme" or some such and then put all of your pages in that one file. Otherwise you will make a change but it will not change all of your pages because they are in different files.

Holi Smoke! What a mess. I will do as you suggest. Tell me how to make sure I save it in a file name I specify and not in one FP chooses. I have'nt paid any attention to that and so don't know where to control it.

RE: Change button color? - 8/23/2004 18:21:38
When you go to Format and then Themes it opens up a box. And in that box is a list of the different themes. You want to make sure you always highlight the same theme (such as construction or whatever) Because it will not let you make changes to the original MS supplied theme and keep the same name. That is why you have "copy2" "copy3" etc. If you don't give it a new name such as "Final Theme" it applies one as "copy of". That is a safeguard so that you always have the original theme as MS supplies it to you to work from. That way if you want to do another web site and use the same theme but different colors and buttons from this one the original is always there to work from. What I would do is go to Theme and CHOOSE on the list the ORIGINAL "Construction" theme. I would open it up and then SAVE AS and give it a new name such as "AEA Theme". Then always open that when you are making any changes and always make those changes saving them to the AEA theme. Apply that theme to all of your pages that you now have. Before you have saved that theme under a new name make sure you check at the top of the box that appears when you open Themes "APPLY TO ALL PAGES". That way FP will apply that saved theme to all of your pages. Then you should be off and running. RWATS a RUCK :>)

Don't forget that while your in there you can change the background and the text color and size! It's fun to play with the themes in FrontPage! See http://oswba.com/home.htm for an example. This is the theme modular. (I think)

All kind people who have mentored this Newbie, I have changed my Theme and want to squeez the height of the individual vertical nav bar items so I can stack more of them on the left. Can I open that portion of the page and resize it in one move or will that require changing the size of each button and replacing all of them?
