Having troubles... - 8/26/2004 20:00:58
I am trying to create a vertical block menu using css. My question is, how can I apply a class to an individual cell of a table? Thanks.

Here is a tutorial for you to look over, after you read this and give it a try, come back with any questions that you might have.

Here is another one for you that has some really good information in it.

I hope that this helps to explain it a bit for you!

Thanks for the information on those pages. I understood some of it, but not all. I am still having a problem though.

Basically what I would like to do is the following:

Example:

Have a table with 5 rows or cells. Each cell would have a different link style associated with it. I've tried <td class="style1"> but it does not work properly.

If you need to see my actual style sheet code, I'll post it.

Hi leatherlips, post your style sheet, it should have worked for you if you followed the tutorial. It could be something in you style sheet or in your html. If you have a link to the page that woudl be great as well. We could see both codes for you and see what is going on for you.

Do you have to use a table? If you are looking to create a button-like effect then the easiest way is to use an un-ordered list and use css to control the background colours, borders font etc. This is one way to do it.

I am not sure about having a different link style for each "button" especially if they are adjacent. It could end up a bit like the proverbial dogs breakfast.

Thanks for the replies. After more carefully studying the css code, I finally fixed my problem!

I did put the class="style" in the right place. The problem was, my link style wasn't complete. I didn't have the active and visited parts in it. When I did that, it worked like a charm!

What I made was a menu with up to two sub-levels. I wanted the main and each sub-level to have a different look. Now it is very easy to manipulate.

Thanks again! I'll post my site when I get if finished in the critique section.

Congrats!! I knew you could do it!!

Sometimes its just a simple thing that we left out that can throw it all off.

I'm looking forward to seeing it when you post it!

I'm having a small problem with Mozilla and Netscape. My menu on the left sticks out a little past the 165 px boundry I set it at. It looks fine in IE and Opera. What am I missing here?

I've posted the site at:

http://www.westcler.org/gm/new

The style sheet is at:

http://www.westcler.org/gm/new/style.css

<edited by c1sissy to fix link to style sheet.>

I think I fixed my problem. Rather than change the style sheet, I changed using my graphic in the table.

Anyway, you can see why I wanted to have 3 different link attributes in my navigation menu. Click on Staff and you'll see.

Thanks.

Leatherlips, I was just looking at your menu, Do you think that a side pop out menu would be better? Just curious. btw, the site looks good. I like the colors that you chose.

Leatherlips,

(It feels weird calling you that)

If you ever have to do that again, you may also use another option > an expandable menu:

http://gazingus.org/html/menuExpandable.html

This method validates and is fully accessible, but it is just another option.
