RE: Critique Please?????? - 9/1/2004 3:36:37
ooh scary colour scheme!!! confused, dark and uncomfortable... doesn't make think of buying a horse/pony

lose the moving bits - annoying

all bold text is hard on the eyes and where do you go for emphasis? bold and bigger?! verdana is a nicer font for screen than arial

background music is a bit of a user no-no: it sounds a bit tacky and people soon get annoyed when they're browsing and music suddenly starts playing - especially if they were listening to their own music at the time.

page/word transitions are really tacky and add nothing to the professioanl look i feel you should be going for as you are in the business of selling. concentrate on the horses! give us some nice pictures, and one or two of Llanddona! i used to live in Bangor so i know there's some nice countryside round where you are.

don't forget to resample your pics after resizing them otherwise you have a pic at say 550pixels wide and > 90k but it's been resize to 150 pixels. the resample button is on the picture toolbar (i think check in the help files)

you have some nice pictures of horses but i'm too distracted by the 80's look of the page - maybe a beige or white background would be nicer. lose the theme and make a template page you can work from

i'll rough out an idea of what i mean and post it...

p.s. sorry if i've been hard but it's for your own good!! if it was a personal site i would be a lot softer ;)

pps no Welsh version??

Thanks folks, keep the comments coming. By the way this is more or less my first site so please keep the technical comments simple!

What do you mean by IE only coding?

<bgsound src="file.mid" loop="-1">

Only Internet Explorer s able to interpret that coding, Browsers like Firefox, Mozzy, Netscape, Opera will not read it, or parse it.

that explains why I didn't hear it. LOL

I gotta say the whole thing does not speak horses. You needs something pastoral looking...light, airy, fresh. I wanna see horses grazing or running or looking at me on that front page.

Learn something new every day don'tcha? lol

But I do agree with Karen....give it a more light, airy look...if you have to...turn it into the country side...just not the english one....full of cows, sheep (friends of Spookys?) and all the added extras:)

Ok, so no music, more friendly font, less scary background.Page transitions - well a lot of people have told me that they like them so ???????

A country theme? Yes ok, more green and grass maybe BUT SHEEP!!!!! No sorry - we see and hear them day in and day out and although outsiders may think they are cute, well ............ :)

Its not really supposed to be a "nice" horsey type of site - more of a selling type site - to appeal to people who know their horses and dont see them as a "my little pony" type thing.

I am aslo having problems getting the search engines to acknowledge me, some one has told me that I have no keywords/description. I thought I did!

i didn't mean to make it more my little pony, just less my little 1980's frankenstein pony. you need a sleek professioanl look.

I would go for maybe light pale blue header background and with brown links, white background, consistent fonts and size throught out the whole site...

Check out this page for an idea

http://www.twhbea.com/

I wanted to find you more to look at, but sadly, most horse breeder sites that I found in Google...suck. You have the chance here to stand out from the crowd!

Good lay out but looks way beyond my simple capabilities!

I can't do any HTML (well hardly any!) so have to rely on WYSIWYG - hence the mish mash when you view HTML!

RE: Critique Please?????? - 9/1/2004 19:42:47
If you say that this website is for experienced folks to purchase horses then I recommend several things. These are only recommendations and things that I would do if it were my design. Every designer has their own technique, I just want to give a little advice.
First of all if you are attempting to sell items on any website it is good to try to get a "professional" look. This usually means lighter colors( I say usually because there are many websites that look professional with dark colors). It would seem to me that your design would look significantly better if you changed your color scheme. Black is a dangerous background color, especially if you are attempting a "professional" look.
Another recommendation I have is to change the images used for your navigation links. If I use images in a design I usually try to make the image related to the content of the page. I do not see that with your page. Your link images represent a "flashy 80s" theme. I recommend rethinking the images you use for you nav links.
Another recommendation I have is to get rid of the flashy moving text. This type of text is dangerous because it annoys many users that visit sites. Most users want the important info, lots of pictures, and they want it up front. Many users leave sites that have flashy text or annoying banners. This brings about the point I made about professionalism. The reason that professionalism is important to a website that is selling products is this. Many consumers who purchase things over the internet are very carefully about who they buy from. The webpage is their first impression of your company. If that first impression is not one that give them a feeling of security with your company, they are likely to leave.
The final recommendation I have for you is to proof and reproof text for repeats. By repeats I mean things that you say over and over again. It is good to make a significant point known to the user, but users get annoyed when they go to read something and they have already read the same thing on a different page, or paragraph.
Once again these are only recommendations for you, they are the way I would design the site if it were me.

yeah, dave, I did see that, but I was looking mostly for aesthetics...it was very very hard to find a professional looking horse breeder's site! Like I said, this was the only one out of the thirty five or so I viewed that looked remotely professional.

wsh - you can achieve a more professional look by doing as suggested with the images and lightening the colors....

If you have no graphic skills, I recommend hiring someone to make a banner or header image for you. ...if you have a strong header image, you may not need much other by way of graphics on the site.

Thanks for all your comments.Strangely I did try to change the navigation links but only found these within the chosen theme.

The site Tennessee Walking site has a good intro page, would something like this be possible to create with FP 2000 WYSIWYG or is that a HTML only design?

Sure you can do that in FP WYSIWYG mode, in fact, that would make it easier. You just need some clever graphics and a little work with tables. Can you do graphic work? Make a nice collage of your horses for the front page and header, and you're in business.

I wouldn't use image links right now - just have text links until you become more comfortable with the whole process. Text links will look just fine and will look better than mismatched image links.

I'm sure that if you can't do graphics yourself, if you put a request in the Graphics forum you could get someone to make you a banner or image for the main page without breaking the bank. :-) If you're being paid for this website, bill the client. You could probably get quite a few different graphics to choose from.
