IIS Hell... - 9/7/2004 8:14:42
Hi all,
I've traditionally created server based webs in Frontpage using IIS (using http://localhost/webname), which I've then published to whichever host I happen to be using at the time.
I've not used FrontPage for a while and now don't seem to be able to use IIS at all. I'm using Frontpage 2002 (and 2003 - same results) on Windows XP Professional.
I either get messages saying that there isn't a server at localhost or that the server doesn't have FP extensions on it.
Could this be a Windows XP SP2 issue? Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get my IIS back?
It's become all the more important because my main site seems to have lost it's shared borders, but I can't open my local version to republish.
Your help would be much appreciated.

Welcome To Outfront
Is IIS running? Ensure the IIS service is running and not stopped.
Right Click On My Computer>>Manage>>Expand Services And Applications Tree>>Right Click On Internet Information Services>>All Tasks>>Restart Internet Information Services
If it is a started service, ensure you have the XP firewall OFF when you go to publish.

Thanks very much for replying so promptly.
I've restarted the web services, but now get the message "the webserver at http://localhost does not appear to have windows sharepoint services installed" when I try to create a new web (in frontpage 2003).
Any clues?

Hi again,
I've also tried to open http://localhost/ in frontpage but get a message saying that the folder http://localhost/ isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password or the filename contains a / or \.

sorry to be dumb, but how do I do that?
Also, I've just tried Frontpage 2002 and that tells me that the web server doesn't have frontpage extensions on it.

Right Click On My Computer>>Manage>>Expand Services and Applications Tree>>Expand Internet Information Services Tree>>Expand Web Sites Tree>>Right Click On Default Web>>Properties>>Select Directory Permissions (??) tab>>In the Anon Access area...click Change (??)>>Click Find>>Click Find Now>>Double Click On Your Username>>OK>>Enter Your Password (uncheck let IIS control password if needs be)>>Click Apply>.Re-enter Password>>Click OK
Keep it open, and Click on The FrontPage Extensions tab, and ensure that they are enabled.
Sorry if there is any confusion...I'm working from memory here

Thanks for This Dan - your help is much appreciated.
I've done the Directory Security bit (which I've never needed to do before - I'm guessing that I'm quite lucky to have never had problems before...)
I've then gone to the Server Extensions Tab in the properties dialog box, but there isn't anything there about Frontpage extensions. There's a tickbox called Enable authoring (which is ticked) and then some Version Control, performance and client scripting sections. Am I in the right place?

Yes, and it's set to what it should be.
Sounds daft, but have you tried re-installing IIS? back-up your webs first though:-
Go to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot and copy them to a safer directory. Only way to do it seeing as you can't access them via FP

I'm now back in the office and have reinstalled IIS and also removed frontpage 2002 and installed 2003.
When I try to open a web or create a new one it tells me that I don't have sharepoint installed.
If I right click on the Default web site in Computer management and look under all tasks, I've got seven options - four relating to server extensions and three relating to server extensions 2002 (wheras on my laptop I only have the first four - the laptop seems to be working fine).
If I try to use any of the 2002 options, it takes me to a page cannot be found web page. Also if I look at the properties of the default web site, the server extensions page looks ok, but the server extensions 2002 has a settings button which when I click it takes me to a page not found web page again.
Any suggestions?

I'll give it a try in a little bit.
Can I just check something - to install FPSE, do I just need to Right click the default web site and choose configure server extensions?
Also, when installing IIS, should I include the Frontpage 2000 server extensions?

Thanks for your help so far - I seem to be drawing a blank here.
I've uninstalled FP and IIS, then rebooted, installed FP, rebooted and then reinstalled IIS (and I did select the frontpage 2000 server extensions box when installing IIS).
I seem to be in the same position.
If I try to open a web or create a new one, I get a message saying that Windows Sharepoint Services does not appear to be installed.
The 2002 server settings all send me to a page not found box, the check sevrer extensions (presumably for 2000) say that everything is fine.
Any ideas where to go next?

Hi Dan,
I've solved it!
I downloaded the current FP2002 extensions and installed them. It gave me a similar error towards the end of the installation process (needs sharepoint), looked like it had failed but then said it had installed succesfully.
I used a command line interface to extend the server but still had the same problem.
I then retried the Remove server extensions 2002 option from within computer management and for the first time it took me to a administration webpage rather than a page not found error. From there it was straightforward to remove the extensions, extend the server again and it's all now working fine.
I'd like to thank you for the time and effort you spent in helping me resolve my problem - I've come out the other side with a working system and a great deal more knowledge about IIS than I'd previously had.
