Auto Calulators for Price quotes - 9/9/2004 7:19:43
Looking for comments (pro and con) about "instant estimators for web sites". Came across one site that included one and it got me wondering how effective they are, what's involved in having one, and if it helps to get paying customers. Can anyone speak to this? Can any one suggest some sites that includes a calculator to take a peek at? Suggestions for more information about calculators?

Ive seen some but I dont use them. In my experience, potential customers seeking first web site are interested and satisfied by "ball park" figure - they simply want to know is it hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands. more experienced customers will understand that an exact price only comes from discussion and details. that is just my opinion.

I use one on my site but that does not mean I think they are a great thing necessarily. It depends on what you are looking to do with it. 1. It adds to the image that we want to give of being transparant, honest and straightforward in all we do - which includes being upfront about pricing. A very large number of the new clients we get are people who have a site already that had worked very poorly for them, they sometimes have realised that they have been "baffled by bull****" and they are scared when changing that they are going to get the run around again. So it helps there. 2. It generates estimates NOT quotes and that is made clear. So it does what is important, as Dan points out, and gives them a ballpark. But there is no such thing as a typical site, so the person looking for a 5 page brochure and the person looking for a very extensive e-commerce site with full content management are buying utterly different things. The generator means you can give ballparks to both of them very easily. So far so good. The downside is that it can put people off who think it is too expensive before they reach the point of contacting you and giving you a chance to sell your services and the value they provide to them. I have somewhat addressed this by also having pre-priced packages, but also I am lucky enough to have for the foreseeable future, as much work as I can handle or more. So frankly I am not interested in talking to people who are not coming to me with a reasonable budget. The estimator screens them out. I do get a good few enquiries as a result of it, maybe I miss just as many, but the ones I get tend to be well pre-qualified and easy to turn into customers.
