hard drive going senile? - 9/15/2004 2:07:57
my hard drive is about 4 years old possibly a bit older. it's partitioned into 2 equal blocks of 6Gb (C:, D:)

yesterday went to open opera and it wouldn't start, noticed my DW, FW, real player shortcut icons were missing. checked in control panel, programs still installed. look at d: which has between 1.2 gb and 2Gb free and there is now 4.5 gig FREE!!! :( whoa loads of stuff just disappeared, nothing in the recycle bin... checked with scandisk for bad sectors etc, nothing.

I'm poised to install XP but should i be looking at a new hard drive first?!

Dave

My 20GB is 6 years old, paritioned 3 ways....a 9, a 7 and a 2...(yes I know it's only 18GB, but you lose that for HHD Parition info and other crap)

What make is it, or don't you know?

Either way, if going to XP, you need at least a 20GB HDD in there, along with DW, FW, PS etc you ain't gonna have much free space when you've finished. I owuld use it as a boot drive, and get an extra one put in

Dan

Who says it as your kids:)

The HDD will b alrite as a boot drive (you need about 1.5GB for XP standard installation).

You need at least 5GB free during installation, recommended is 10GB...I still say 20GB is what you need at least...ah what the heck..I want a 250GB:)

So what's that in real money then. :)

Giomanach, I think we pay about 40 quid for a 40 gig drive, maybe a bit less depending on how much stuff we are buying at the time. & it's all new kit in boxes & such, not knock off or second hand. :)
