It's okay Mike. Just as long as you don't do it in the RAW!

:)

Just to let you know Gail..if you do optimise the coding...I'm gonna be really busy for a while...I've got a Dating Site to do in ASP for Erin:) So I may not be able to lend that all important second set of hands

What do you mean "optimize" coding? Are you talking about changing everything to full CSS?

Also, better clarify before I get into trouble. My joke to Mike about RAW refers to one of the three types of digital camera file formats.

WOW: Reducing bandwidth - 9/18/2004 9:44:15
Wow! I had about 30% more visitors to my site yesterday than visited the day before. The number of pages and hits increased quite a bit too.

Bandwidth usage from one day to the other: Almost no increase. Yipee!

Really pays off, this virtual dieting! On to more of it.

I sure wish dieting was this easy in real life. :)

My guess is that changing everything to full css would be a huge undertaking. I certainly wouldn't let some one do it for nothing! Quite frankly, my site doesn't generate enough income to make paying someone worthwhile. I do appreciate your kind offer.

As to my joke to Mike about the RAW, well to understand it you'd have to read Mike and my posts to each other in the mod area at another board. We're just jesting with each another.

But to answer your question, there is nothing wrong with RAW or TIFF files generated by digital cameras that have those options. Most pros and advanced digital camera users seem to prefer the benefits of RAW for post-processing images.

For the average digital camera user though, I think the insistence of some that the RAW format is superior is bunk! I've read a lot about RAW and base my comment on what I've read from various photography sources. I don't like to get into a debate about it as it's about as pointless as asking which is better: FrontPage or Dreamweaver.

There is a firmware upgrade for my digicam to add RAW. Not interested at all. I shoot at the highest resolution of my camera, with the quality setting at fine. Serves me very well.

Strike that! I meant almost a 45% increase!! :)

I have no idea how many Outfronters visited my site but, based on the unique visitors, I doubt Outfronters would have impacted the number that much. One of the reasons for the increase may be that I recently resumed AdWords, which I stopped during the summer months. Despite the lack of advertising, the number of those finding/visiting the site somehow keeps growning.

The main point, of course, and for which I am thrilled, is that there was less than a 2% increase in bandwidth usage despite a hefty increase in visitors.

With everyone's help and suggestions, I think I'm heading in the right direction. As a bonus, I've learned some very helpful new stuff.

Thanks again to all!

gail

I've been browsing through digicamhelp.com for months now...and I have lost count of how many pages I've read...:). Converting it over to a CSS layout wouldn't just be a huge undertaking.....it would be like practically redesigning it! If I had the time....I wouldn't ask much if at all...c'mon...you've helped me in the past:)

My main problem with receiving TIFFs from clients is.....umm...they normally send me ones 20MB+...."I've uploaded a few images to my servers....here's your FTp login details"...I log into the server, go to the directory given...5 images....100MB...ugh. So I just charge for image file processing:)

If you ever do decide to go CSS stylo with it, just drop me an email, and I'll see what I can do :), and don't bother asking about how much....we can come to an agreement:)

Dan

Thanks Dan. I do appreciate the offer. If I ever decide to go full CSS I'll let you know. It's not something that I'm considering right now since then I'd have to learn css positioning, even if you did the initial chages.

I'm so delighted that you find my site helpful!

Spooky: removing white space - 9/20/2004 11:20:07
quote:

Certainly remove any unused code.
eg - simply removing white space and comments, youll lose about 1k

This suggestion raised my curiosity.

I understand why removing comments will help, but not white space. I may have been under the mistaken assumption that browsers disregard white space.

thanks,
gail

blank spaces are rendered as a just one blank space but in the filesize they are counted because they take up 'space'

Yes, but removing blank space would seem, to me, to be more nuisance than it's worth. it doesn't make it easy to read the html if there is no white space! Is the amount of space saved really THAT significant?

Who reads html?!? :):)

It took me about 1 1/2 hours to delete all the white space manually. I suppose every little bit helps. But the real benefit was that in going through all the pages I noted places where I could delete or improve graphics.

All in all, the couple of hours I've spent should pay off, I think. I've shaved between 7 and 14 seconds off all the pages in the site. If I get a fair amount of visitors and page hits, that translates into quite a number of seconds...and that translates into less bandwidth useage.

Thanks also for the kind words about the site. I so enjoy doing it and it seems others find the info useful...for that I'm pleased.
