How do you keep your customer informed about their site as you build it out? Do you let them see it as it is being built or do you schedule a certain point in time to show them ? Do you leave it up all the time for them to look at whenever or what? Do you build it out in a "protected" web or on the actual site it will be hosted on? Do you make do it as a subweb off the real site or use another location and then share the path? Or is there a better way? While working all weekend on a site for a new customer I played around with alot of different looks and approaches- some pretty ugly! I would be really embarrassed to have anyone think that this is the type of work I produced. The customer is really anxious to see their first website and is also really really fussy and over reacts to everything. I know I would be spending hours trying to explain why it looks like it does when it will never end up looking like the draft. How do the real web designers handle this? Still a newbie...

With me, this all depends on whether I'm working direct for a client or as a third party developer/designer. If I'm working for a client who has their own server, I will upload it to my servers for them to preview, and I will also ensure it requires some form server side process to work, so they can't "steal" it and then tell me they don't want me to work for them anymore. If working as a third party developer, I'll send the work I've done, after I've received payment for that particular phase, but until I've been paid, It will reside on my servers/PC HTH Dan

I find that I am not good at predicting who will be like that!!! ones who seem that way, turn out to be ok and ones who seem nonchalant, turn out that way..lol usually, i try to develop pieces first... share drafts and get agreement.. top logo color scheme navigation etc. as they buy into pieces, they are buying into final design.

A lot depends on the site you're building. I don't usually let clients peek until I've created the main template and am happy with it. If I'm working directly at the clients host site, I put up a plain page (eg. http://www.insurancepartners.org/ ) then work in the background where my customer has no access. I name pages something like index1.htm or contact2.htm so only I can access it. I change the name of those pages after I'm satisfied with the look and functionality, then let the customer look at it. In the example above, I have several pages uploaded that are not linked to anything. If I want the client to view one, I send him/her the url. I can always do Save As with a slightly different name if I want to do additional work and if I don't want clients to see those changes until I'm satisfied. not confusing..thats exactly what i do after i get their ok on some fundamental aspects..see my prior post
