frustration - 9/24/2004 15:59:56
problem: can't play more than 2 stages of colin macrae 2 without computer crashing - either fully or the game crashing (it's NOT my driving :)
warcraft III demo similar experience, also CMR 3,4,5

having recently installed new hard drive, xp pro and updated to service pack 1, directx 9.0c and updated my graphics drivers and anything else i can think of i am still unable to play my game even on the lowest graphics detail for more than about 10 mins at a time.

what the f***

no viruses, adware, trojans, fluff, dead animals...

i have an ahtlon xp 2600 running at 1.9 GHz, 512 MB DDR ram, a club radeon 9200 128 mb stacks of free hd space, only installed everything last weekend. progs under windows run fine (winamp, dreamweaver, photoshop, office app, all that stuff)

my system should be more than capable of running these games and at higher res than i'm trying. oh doom III crashed as well, unsurprisingly.

why didn't i just buy some crappy hp mini thing that would run dw and fw just about and then buy an x-box? i'm so not going to buy a pc again. ever. a mac, or a games machine (x-box-PS2)

i spend all day learning how to building kayaks (just because i can't get a job as a designer here) and all i want to do is play a couple of games in between updating sites and proofreading finnish translations.

instead i spend hlaf my time rebooting or starting up CMR (colin macrae rally2) over and over again trying to get to a point where i can save.

if this carries on i'll have to take up yoga or something :(

Thats really strange....my 633Mhz runs the full version of Warcraft III (ROC & TFT) fine...and Lotus Challenge fine...(latter of which be very hardware and graphically demnading)

I don't like AMDs so I'm gonna blame it on that...lol

And Doom III runs fine on my Celeron 2.2Ghz...but then there's no suprise...lol

How much RAM ya got in it?

Is your PSU / CPU fan running?
Typically intensive games can heat the system up and cause a crash.
You fan may have failed without you noticing (it doesnt heat up enough surfing!)

OK...mines a 633Mhz Celeron...392MB RAM, 20Gb HDD (taken 60GB out temporary)....and mine runs some very inteasives very well...(Unreal 2 being one of them, and Halo for that fact)...strange...still blame it on the AMD:)

Dave -

You may want to run a test on your RAM, just for gits and shiggles.

Also, are the games new enough to run on XP without having to "run as 98" or something? I don't know either of those two very well... but I ran into similar problems when I upgraded to XP.

I couldn't get my NASCAR Racing 2003 to run more than two or three laps before it would crash the whole system... and it ran fine on 98 and ME.

I never did get it to work, even with the tweaks and patches from Papyrus.

Also, even if your fans seem to be working, they may not be pumping enough air through the box to keep things cool. Make sure the vents aren't blocked, etc.

BTW - are you getting a hard reboot when this happens? BSOD? or other..?

sometimes goes back into xp and only the game 'layer'. somtimes reboots completely (i have overheat protection on my motherboard to protect my processor so it will swicth off above 95 degrees)

however, just ran it for 25 mins with he cover off the machine and got as far as france!! (finland then greece then france) so seems like heat is the root of it, thqanks spooky, and everyone else. oh it is an xp ok game, and fans run fine and vent isn't blocked, windows open.

bit poor if i have to run it with the case off when playing games. maybe when i play doomIII willl have to play in the freezer!

Buy more fans being the cheaper & safer option. :)

I just added another 3 this weekend. :)

Then again I did drop in a new 250GB HD. >:]
