ASP Pages Hang - 9/27/2004 16:42:46
I have ASP(all of them) pages on a host that hang every few days. HTML pages work fine. The ASP pages will hang and just do nothing for about 2 hours or so, or if the host "restarts my site" (not sure what that actually means). I can try and refresh the ASP pages but they still just sit there. I can even change an extension on an HTML page to ASP and then it hangs, with no ASP coding inside.

The host has stated that since this site "shares application memory" with other sites that is the problem. They have suggested that if I have the same variables defined as other sites that this could cause a problem. This doesn't really make sense to me though. Aren't variables tied to the process that is executing them? If my site has 10 or 100 people on it, that would mean they are all using the same variables. This just doesn't make sense to me.

The other explanation is that my error routines, or lack of them, could be causing the hangs. This could be possible of course, but this software is running on a couple of other hosts without any problems.

I'm curious if any of you have run into this before and what was the outcome, or if any of you host yourselves and have thoughts on this.

thanks, Brian

Do all scripts hang? Just some? Are they using FSO, Access, or just general asp scripts?

However - if you can change an HTML page to asp extension and have it fail, then I would bring that up with the host.
It sounds like their problem.

All ASP pages are hanging. Some ASP pages do FSO, Access, and then others just general ASP. I'm not sure though in what is specifically causing the hangs. This happens intermittently.

I have brought it up with the host and they answered with the above, "shares application memory" theory, meaning me or possibly others are messing up ASP itself. It does seem really strange that a page with just the extension hangs, but I don't know the internals of how the ASP engine. Just because you call a page ASP, I'm guessing it must call the engine, but then it hangs even though it has nothing to do. Strange.

So your host is suggesting other people sites (which you have no control over) are bringing yours down??

ask your host nicely if they will look at the logs for you and see what the error is at the time of problem.

I had the same problem several years ago which is why I got a dedicated server.

Yes, or it is mine doing it. It is on one of their cheaper plans that "shares application memory" with other sites.

Good suggestion. Will do, somehow nicely :)

That is what they are recommending, kind of, I think. I'm not sure if it is a dedicated host they are talking about or just getting away from the shared application memory. I'm thinking the later.
