processor speed not showing correctly - 9/28/2004 13:32:31
my friend has a nice new laptop (not sure hwat make but with wide screen)

he has an athlon xp 2.7Gh - allegedly - but his windows XP (with SP2) shows it as 490hz or some such nonsense in the system info. the shop said that it might be the bios is set at a lower speed (why?!) took it in and reinstalled everything but still it shows the same. now they are saying that sometimes XP won't display the speed of AMD's properly. sounds like BS to me but i wondered if any of you had heard of this? the guy is leasing the laptop and i paying 1700 euros over 3 years and wants to be sure he's getting what he's paying for.

any ideas?

Dave

Take it back. The BIOS has been altered to a different processor speed. What model of AMD is it? Differnt processor models have different settings, I know I can switch my 633 between 633 and 400 through the BIOS, and that's the problem.

An untrained users (ie someone who doesnt do it for a living) altering the BIOS will discard the guarantee and warranty on the machine

Oddly enough I just had a somewhat similer experience with Venger (My tower PC).

Dunno if it is related but it had me & my mate puzzled...

General story is I bought a P4 2.8ghz chip for my p00ter a while back, however when we installed it the puter would not boot up, we couldn't suss out what the issue was so put it down to a dodgy chip. I bought the chip from eBay & by the time we fitted it we had run out of time to send it back & get the money back as it was sold as a "Working chip".

However a little while later we were knocking up my 2nd PC so I could render stuff on with Bryce while leaving Venger free for me to do other stuff on, on a whim we put in the 2.8 chip, low & behold it worked. So we then thought Venger's MOBO was throwing up the issue.

Now, the oter day I bought a brand new boxed 3.0ghz P4 chip for Venger, same thing, wouldn't boot, so we spoke to the guy in the shop asking if it was the MOBO (Which states it can run 3.2ghz P4). He asked us a few questions & then mentioned it may be the temp memory causing the issue, as in if a certain type isn't used or a combination of different sticks are used that could cause issues, now Venger has 3 X 256 sticks & all are different types. So we now think that is the issue, gotta get some new ones & then make sure that is it.

but this is a laptop and all the stuff comes from the factory - so you would reckon they would know what components are compatible?!

I wouldn't touch a stock/shop bought PC or expect it to even boot or work right.

PC World, more like PC idiots.

It could be that the BIOS need to be updated as well... depending on how long it sat on the shelf before it shipped there could be any number of things that may cause that problem.

Updating and changing BIOS settings isn't that difficult, but if it's relatively new I'd recommend taking it back where he got it as well... no sense chancing it.
