Cant find web site :S - 9/30/2004 11:07:04
I've got 3 computers, 2 running Windows 2003 Server, 1 just running Windows XP. The 1st server (\\FILE) is set up as a file server, a dhcp server, a domain controller and a dns server. That server works fine and i've set up roaming profiles, permissions etc. it's cool. But my second server (\\WEB), is set up as an application server, in order to serve local web sites to the other computers. I've added ip addresses in the range of 192.168.20.1 > 192.168.20.20 to the NIC on \\WEB and then in IIS i've added a web site and assigned it one of these ip addresses (192.168.20.1). In DNS on \\FILE, i've added a forward lookup zone called "com" and within it a domain called "allighty" and within that a host(a) named www which points to 192.168.20.1. so in internet explorer on \\WEB, i can access the web site by entering www.allighty.com, the same is fine on \\FILE, however, when i log on to the domain (allighty.local) with the client (Windows XP) computer i cant seem to view the web site. even by enetering the ip address in the browser directly, it cant find it. however it does display the default web site when i enter http://WEB. I just cant seem to figure out why it doesnt work.. Do i need to install DNS on \\WEB? Or should i create the ip addresses on the NIC on \\FILE ??? If you have any idea, or any where that you think i mighty be able to find an answer or an explanation, i'd be MORE than greatful!!! :) Thankyou for your time ! - Callam

Callam Welcome To Outfront That looks like a complex set-up, but there's one thing your missing. Manual alteration of DNS, try this: Search the PC you want to have the doman for a file called HOSTS, when found, you may get HOSTS.SAM, remove the extension. Open the file with Notepad, and at the bottom (past all the MS Garbage), enter the following: 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.0.XXX www.domain.com Lower one being the Computers IP address and desired domain. This will work within the network you have created and no-where else HTH
