Duplicate files - 9/30/2004 15:08:39
I use Front Page 2000 to create my webs. However, I upload to my site using FTP.

I've been trying to clean up my site to get rid of files not in use in order to conserve space.

I notice that for almost every folder I upload (including subfolders within them), that another folder is created for each of them, and it's titled vti_cnf

What exactly is that for? It contains everything in the folder that it sits in, and seems like a huge waste of space if you ask me. It's essentially doubling the size of what is on my web by way of content.

Can I delete the files inside the vti_cnf folders and the folders themselves, without affecting my website?

Essentially what it looks like this on the display tree is:

Stained Glass Tiles (main folder)
........ vti_cnf
- red tiles
..........vti_cnf
- Green tiles
...........vti_cnf

Inside those vti_cnf folders is a copy of every image in the red or green tile folder. If I delete the vti_cnf files and folder from the red tiles folder.... will the red tiles still display on my web or does that vti_cnf folder need to be there in order to display the images on the web?

Hope I explained that clearly enough :)

If you don't rely on Frontpage components, which since you use FTP it sounds like you don't, then you can delete those.

Those are folders that Frontpage creates so it can handle a lot of the back-end stuff it does on the server (by way of FPSE's).

It may not be recognized as an FP web if you do delete them... but from the sound of it you don't care about that...

Thanks. No it doesn't matter to me whether it's recognized on the net as a front page web. I won't delete the folders from the web on my hard drive, but they are definitly going from the uploaded site now that I know I don't need them up there.

Thanks so much :)
