Peppergal -> PSP V.9??? (10/2/2004 12:39:47)

How did I miss out on hearing that PSP has Version 9?? Anyone use it? I'm thinking of upgrading...wondering if it's worth while....is it that much better than v. 8?

Upgrade is only $55, so it's do-able...

d a v e -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/2/2004 13:23:15)

was going to download the demo but you have to use their downloader and you can't resume, might have another look but then again might not...

jaybee -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/2/2004 16:57:41)

Well you could have knocked me down with a feather. I've only just (3 weeks ago) upgraded to version 8.

8 is quite a leap over 7 and takes a bit of getting used to so if you're going to change I'd go straight for 9 and get the confusion over an done with in one go.

My .Net magazine says the following:

quote:

PSP9 is closer to Photoshop than ever before.
It's aimed at 3 kinds of users - Photographers, Graphic Designers and Artists
New filters to remove colour aberrations and noise from digital pics
Support for RAW camers images
New vector drawing tools
Improved text support and rendering
new natural media filters and brushes
New art effects

BUT

Text handling is clunky compared to Fireworks
Web export features remain in a separate box
Baffled by picture brushes - why would you want to draw zoo animals all over an image?

AND

It's possible to run PSP9 on a 300mhz Pentium in the same way that it's possible to travel from Land's End to John O'Groats on a spacehopper, you'll get there but it won't be much fun. Recommended system requirements 1Ghz with 512Mb RAM and even then some of the photo filters take time.

I have noticed that PSP8 can be slow to load so 9 is a no no for me until I upgrade. And they're right about the picture tubes. It's a giggle shoving giraffes and lions all over stuff for all of ooooh..... 5 minutes.

I skipped 8 after having a look at it & being put off because it wasn't as idiot proof as 7.

I may mooch over 9 & see what it's like, but I doubt it will replace my 7.

nowlkldy -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/2/2004 17:38:28)

I'm definitely gonna upgrade. Just as soon as I learn 6.
(silent joke between me and Nancy and about a hundred other people)

I didn't like 8 very much at first but 8 has better control over certain features (like seamless tiling, image optimization, and a few other things) than v. 7. I finally got used to 8 and eventually uninstalled 7.

I am quite happy with 8, but am wondering if I'm really missing out on something with v9, or if 9 is just a "facelift" of sorts...

Dave - version 6? Don't feel bad. Someone else I know is using version 5! ;)

LOL.

I actually use picture tubes quite a bit. They're usually good quality and easier to resize than clip art. I've also had need for some of the weird custom brushes too, though I don't know if I'd ever need a zebra or other safari animal...but hey. I might get a job designing a website for SafariTours, so who knows. LOL

I might be interested for the photo effects....I have 512 ram and a 1.2ghz processor, but I do notice it's sluggish from time to time.

Taz -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/2/2004 19:58:40)

I'm currently running a P4 1.8ghz (waiting for my monster 3ghz to go in still =/ ) & it runs like a charm, no hangs ups or significant delays...

Till I use KPT's FraxFlame that is. [8D]

Then again on a desktop sized canvas of 1600x1200 it's not really suprising is it. [:-]

Is there any new stuff added to Animationshop with PSP9 or is that still as it was with 7?

Peppergal -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/3/2004 0:11:34)

It doesn't say anything about animation shop being improved or revamped...but I might not have seen it...I was too shocked to find there was a version 9 and I didn't know it. LOL Guess I need to visit jasc.com more often!!!

I'll have to head over to pspug.org and see if there's any buzz over there comparing the two. I tried searching the jasc forums for a v8 vs. v9 thread, but there were so many threads to sift thru that I got a headache just looking at the search results. LOL

KCIWebMaster -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/4/2004 16:34:49)

I did recently upgrade (they kept sending me email reminders because I had ver 7 and then 8) but I haven't really had a chance to try it. I'm still new to PSP completely so I can't really compare the versions. If I play with it again soon I'll try to remember to post my comments.[:D]

Giomanach -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/4/2004 16:37:39)

PSP8 is a bit too sluggish on my system...so I'm sticking with 7 for now till I upgrade motherboard and processor....but I use PS CS...but that's just slow to load..not all the way through, and its a bigger program[&:]

jaybee -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/4/2004 17:29:08)

With Animation Shop having been mentioned,

One of my gripes with Flash is that it's so flipping complicated. I've tried Swish as well but that didn't inspire me either. I tend to like software I can pick up as I go and when I get stuck just rifle around in the help files, I don't have time for huge learning curves.

Anyways, both of the above are also a bit pricey if you don't intend using them a lot. So I was on the lookout for something simple, cheap and effective and I've found it!

It's called Kool Moves. Exports and imports swf files and is really simple to use. Price? $39. [:D]

dpf -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/5/2004 8:40:38)

i bought Flash, opened it and stared at it..nothing was intuitive...so I walked away... took a course and wow..its actually very easy once you get into it!!!! and being vector based., it does motion and shape morphing with a single image rather than multiple so file size is tiny. id be glad to help anyone wanting to learn Flash

Giomanach -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/5/2004 9:07:37)

And for graphical FLASH work, I recommend using Fireworks in conjunction with FLASH MX, when copying the images/components over, the properties are retained etc, unlike when copying from PSP where it copies a transparent background as white.

Just a recommendation[8|]

Peppergal -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/5/2004 13:06:30)

that drives me stinking nuts. Whenever I open a transparent gif in PSP it opens with a BLACK background!! I hate it!! I have to select the background and cut it out to have a trans. image! I keep thinking I have to have a setting wrong, or something, but for the life of me, I could find nothing to "change" to fix the issue.

It will open PSP files with transparent backgrounds just fine, but not gifs.

[:@]

One other complaint I have with PSP is for text - if I try to put more than one line of text on something, the second line is distorted...the first letter of each word in the other lines looks cockeyed. each new line has to be made seperately, and that drives me insane too (though it has been a help with some of my graphics jobs requiring a slight change to the text - but still. Annoying as all get out.

Peppergal -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/5/2004 13:08:01)

jaybee - thanks for that link. I'm going to check that out. I can't afford Flash but this is a great price. I was thinking of getting Swish, but if this will do the simple things I need to do from time to time, why pay more?

dpf -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/5/2004 13:13:15)

does it allow modification of .swf files? Flash doesnt.

jaybee -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/5/2004 15:27:13)

Yes it does but only if you buy it. The demo blocks it.

I've got Flash MX 2004. I did the tutorial in which a car spins round and buttons flash and play tunes.

My car rotated 90 degrees and then vanished up it's own whatsit. [&:]

Plug ya brain into WinMX or Limewire & lemme download ya knowledge on Flash please. [:D]

Flash & Photoshop are pretty much the only 2 progs I picked up, opened & got that blank zombie look over, everything else I can spend an hour or so fiddling & I start getting results, those two, nuffin. [&:]

Too many damn options or just not "idiot proof" user friendly IMO. [image]http://ganjataz.com/Forum/images/smiles/nfi.gif[/image]

I concur with the comment about Fireworks though, nice clean graphics & pretty easy to get into. I really need to play about with that more & see what it offers, but the main thing that stopped me moving on with it was the compliancy issues it has when you make webpage stuff with it, though for graphics it's not baaaaaad at all. =]

they're not aimed at idiots, lol! didn't you manage to do anything in PS?? flash is a bit off putting especially when you are used to freehand/fireworks and realise the selection tools don't quite work the same :(

i downloaded psp9 but haven't really looked at it yet...

In PSP7 there was a menu option "View transparency" or something similar.

I haven't found that in PSP8 yet but I just know it's hiding somewhere in those menus. [&:]

Too get used to FLASH, it's easier to use Fireworks, then move up to FLASH. Fireworks has similar layout etc, it's just he features and options change when switching between the two, but it makes the program learning curve a hell of a lot easier[;)]

As for PS, if your used to PSP, getting PS to work for you can be difficult...but hey...I managed it..[:D]

Easiest way to learn that one is go buy/download a copy of Photoshop Class in A Book...I have it in eBook format somewhere[&:]...

I get on well enough with other stuff thankfully, & I can usually get around using Flash or PS with another prog that is easier, faster & more user friendly than Flash or PS.

I have sat down a few times to play with both Flash & PS but each time end up closing them & going doing summin else because they just seem like hard work compared to everything else I play with or use. I guess I just have a mental block where those 2 are concerned, though everything else slots into place pretty fast.

I can easily skip PS cos most everything I would wanna do I can do with PSP or PSP + plug ing or other work arounds, Flash though is something I know I could do some advanced stuff in that no other prog gives me the tools for. I guess I will just have to wait till I am in the right frame of mind for sitting down with it & working it till summin clicks.

Me too.

bobby -> RE: PSP V.9??? (10/7/2004 14:53:11)

Personally I never upgraded past version 6... found the Gimp and decided it was just as good for what I needed. No animation shop, but I rarely played with that anyway.

... and it cost nothing (other than the occasional donation when I'm in the mood) [:D]

www.gimp.org

I use it at work and one PC at home (dual boot to Linux and Windows, use it on both OS's). It took a couple weeks to get used to the interface, but now i like it more than PSP (though, as I said I haven't tried 7, 8 or 9)

I still have Photoshop 6 on my main machine at home... Gimp isn't quite up to that level yet

KCIWebMaster -> RE: PSP V.9??? - Just bought by Corel (10/15/2004 11:53:37)

FYI

I just got an email from Jasc that they have been purchased by Corel. I haven't really used any Corel products (although they are on my Dell machine). Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Peppergal -> RE: PSP V.9??? - Just bought by Corel (10/15/2004 12:37:31)

Corel has a good reputation. I've never used their graphics program but everyone I know who has used Word Perfect loves it.

I got that same email yesterday and had a feeling of forboding....I'm afraid that PSP will eventually become higher priced.....

bobby -> RE: PSP V.9??? - Just bought by Corel (10/15/2004 12:49:39)

Corel Draw was always overpriced for what you got, IMO

Hopefully they won't do the same with future versions of PSP

I would call it a good thing... until we see evidence to the contrary...

[:D]

Nigel -> RE: PSP V.9??? - Just bought by Corel (10/15/2004 14:42:38)

If anyone wants to learn photoshop 5,6,7 or CS you could do a lot worse than buying Barry Beckhams CD tutorials:

www.beckhamdigital.co.uk

They are very easy to follow and you'll be an expert before you know it.

Nigel

I'm surprised: compared to what?
say freehand? where you only get that (i.e Freehand) and in corel you get paintshop thingy photopaintshop whatsit called image editor and a couple of other things i forget now and a load of clipart (better than freehand's which is still the same **** from freehand 7 or somewhere and it's cheaper than freehand or illustrator and recent version did a good job of doing the whole prepress thing (though i did a job i nornmally would have done in FH in corel 10 and it was a bit of a pain in the a*** but probably cos i hadnt used it since v5.0.

still it's a pity that jasc couldn't keep it - they were pioneers (well not the only ones) of cheap good AND quality software
