Protecting Images - 1/29/2001 13:01:00
Can anyone advise on the best way to protect graphics published to the web. For example to stop people copying photographs or images and using them to their own ends.
Many thanks for help.

You can't - in order for any browser to show the graphic it has to be on the users machine. IE: If they can see it, it's already on thier Hard Drive.

There are programs that allow you to place a "invisible" watermark on your graphic. And if you find some one using one you can sue...

Put the grafic in a table cell, insert another 1-cell-table and in this a transparent gif long and high as the table cell. The border of the table should be set to zero.

If someone tries to copy the picture, he will only get the transparent gif.

(Read this somewhere, but never tried it...)

If you cut your images in thirds and save them as image_top.jpg, image_middle.jpg, and image_bottom.jpg you can insert them in FP with image_top.jpg--then a <br>--image_middle.jpg--another <br>--finally image_bottom.jpg

Most visitors won't know how to put them back together again, and most will only get one third of an image when right-clicking your image to save.

You can insert a Javascript in your page to keep people from right clicking on your page. This will help to elliminate people either downloading your graphic or viewing your source info. The Javascript is posted at:
www.frontpagehowto.com/discussion/_fphow2discuss/00000330.htm You can also order software from a company called Safeimage that clams they can safeguard your image.

Ultimately, if you can see it on your browser, it can be pirated.
Some tricks may prevent some kiddies, but anyone who desperately wants your graphic will.

Even try taking a screen shot......

While viewing a web page in IE5.5 (maybe earlier versions as well) if you go to File>Save As and save the HTML file to your desktop, Windows will do so and create a folder with all the visible images for that page placed inside it. It won't save mouseover images, but it gets everything, and I mean, EVERYTHING, else.

Don't kill yourself trying to find a way to prevent anyone from taking them. Go to http://www.digimarc.com and learn about watermarking your images. It's about the best you can do.

Watermark and make a polite statement on your site that the images are not available without permission.

This will not stop those who want to, but it will help with some of them.

Like everyone else has said, there isn't anything you can do to stop someone who really wants to be a thief.

I can save your images any number of ways from my browser. View source, copy URL of image, paste it into my address bar and presto! Your image.

Right click and save, go through my cache, etc etc etc.
I can even get rid of watermarks. So, there just isn't any way to do it. If you publish it, expect somebody else is going to use it.
