Giomanach -> Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/5/2004 14:57:06)

Hi Guys

Filezilla refuses to connect to any web server of any kind. this is a real bummer, as I need it to upload client work.

PC Stats:

XP Pro SP2
Filezilla 2.2.8d - Just Upgraded
Behind Shared Broadband Connection

Had no problems connecting before SP2 went on...should I seek out a new FTP client, or will you guys attempt to help me fix it?

Tried:

Re-installing FZ
Altering Connection settings to Passive, using a Proxy etc
Tried everything short of wiping the damn thing...and I'm not prepared to do so

TIA

dan i have just gone sp2 and tried same version of filezilla and i can connect fine - double check you settings just in case??

Giomanach -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/5/2004 15:58:55)

I have it set to connect directly to the net, which is what it was on before I installed XPSP2...hmm..wonder if the problem could be on the hardware firewall...doubt it...

The hardware firewall is worth checking out...

Also, make sure FZ has permission to access the web (SP2 makes you confirm this remember...)

No way... [:D]
I doubt another FTP would be able to connect either until you figure out why this one can't...

Have you tried to FTP via IE or command prompt?

d a v e -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/6/2004 12:00:18)

also, can you ftp to the same site using DW?

Giomanach -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/6/2004 14:43:50)

Command Prompt is a no-no..lol..see attached image

My problem is outgoing connections...I can't upload via Online Control Panels either. Strange how I can upload images to here and send files via MSN, YM and ICQ...

I don't trust Ie for obvious reasons...but I'll give it a shot in a minute..

Hardware FW checked...originally had to set firewall down a level to get net connection working, all outgoing connections are allowed, unknown incoming blocked, I have full access, both incoming and outgoing connections...

This is really strange, as it doesn';t matter whether the FTP server is Unix or Windows based, it can't connect, never mind try to login...

IE won't connect either...see attached image

Any ideas? this one is beyond me...

I don't have XP firewall on before you ask..even with no firewall bar the Hardware one...it still doesn't connect....

Hardware firewall is a Fedora box....spliting a BB connection via a router...no chnages have been made to it's config, nor has it been restarted since I installed SP1..never mind SP2...

If that's the case I'd say it must be either your Fedora firewall or your ISP..?

Nothing else makes sense...

If Unix FTP's could access I'd say it was in your Windows configuration or somthing in a Windows program...

Since it's cross platform and system wide, I'd say it has something to do with your firewall...

Do you use cron to automatically grab updates? Maybe a recent update has closed a port that you need?

Giomanach -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/6/2004 15:22:09)

The Fedora box was the first thing set-up before I put the 3 workstation 1 hardware FW network up...it worked before I put SP2 on. I haven't changed any settings on the Fedora box at all...

Only major updates to happen are the two other Windoze boxes have been upgraded from Pro to Media Center, and SP2 installed on all three.

I don't cron in for updates, I prefer to do that manually, as updates,. can, and have, corrupt the windoze installation.

Must be port 21 it's closed off somewhere...as I have all FTP protocols/programs set to use that...

One thing yet to try - connect one of the Media Center PCs directly to the net, and connect through that...

It's a shame the main PC and FW is in my parents room....[&:]

bobby -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/6/2004 15:32:39)

Sounds like it will be fun to try and figure out what's going on...

Giomanach -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/6/2004 15:40:25)

Doesn't work when I connect through one of the Media Center boxes either[&:]

At this rate I'm gonna end up re-writing part of Xp...and Mr Gates won;t be too pleased that an 18 year old can do that[:D]

Giomanach -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/6/2004 16:27:03)

Ok, just tried DW FTp and FP2003 FTP...nada...[:@]

Oh well...time to start delving in the application String Tables...And Possibly the Binary Libraries[:D]

bobby -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/6/2004 17:37:13)

That should be fun...

Giomanach -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (10/7/2004 3:52:36)

After hours of surgery on XP last night....I got no-where...lol

But this morning, I checked Event Viewer....and xpsp2res.dll is throwing up an error about "Limit of TCP/IP connections has been reached"...I told you it was SP2!!!

I have that much reliant on a port though...lol...time to open up a few more..and close off some others...[&:]

Guys

Have had a couple of emails regarding this thread recently, asking for help with this and other problems, one from Don, and another from an Non-Outfrontier, and it has reminded me to let you know how I solved the problem.

I wiped my PC and started again....which was really convenient as I've just recently installed a new 80GB HDD...[:D]

My Guess is windows was corrupt somewhere, probably due to me messing about with the innards, butI doubt it[sm=whistling.gif][sm=innocent.gif]

carbz -> RE: Filezilla Can't connect.... (11/11/2005 9:12:59)

SP2 huh!? curiously i had the same problem with filezilla just about when i finally decided to give SP2 a chance... but only with filezilla (which is my #1 ftp program choice and was hoping to keep using this one) other ftp programs would connect properly[:)] anyway... passive mode did it for me! i know you fixed your problem but for the readers who just like me that don't want to format their PC: open filezilla, go to edit -> settings -> firewall settings -> passive mode! tadaa

see you all
