Masking - 2/13/2001 20:34:00
I'm having a problem masking images, most of the time (jpegs) the edges turn out jagged. I've tried all sorts of workarounds but this one has me stumped. I've tried smoothing the mask, feathering but to no avail...any ideas?

Micrographx, Picture Publisher, I have Adobe 5, but I started with Micrografx and keep going back to the program rather than tackling Adobe. It's a bit daunting rather like Dreamweaver when it throws all the windows up at you...as opposed to the ordered view in Frontpage.

Hi, In photoshop, one thing that will help is if after you select the area you wish to mask, you choose select, feather and give it a number of pixels to feather. Experiment a little with settings. You'll find that for a web graphic, a feather will often take the jaggy out and not be noticeable. This is because it makes the cut 'fade' from the cut to the non-cut area. Try it. If you don't wish to try it in photoshop, I assume the software you are using will also have some feature like that.

Thanks everyone, I'dont mean to sound like a dummy but two years ago the closest I had been to a computer was an ATM. I walked into a store not knowing anything about computers and walked out with an IBM Aptiva ( after paying for it ) No one in my area had a computer so it's been a matter of trial by error. The first program I purchased was Graphics Suite by Micrografx, and Frontpage 98.It's been a steep learning curve highlighted by "lights going on" every once in awhile when I truely understand the workings of a program. Picture Publisher has been a great introduction, for an artist of the old medium of pen and brush. I now realise it's time to go with Adobe Photoshop and the great thing is when I installed it yesterday, it didn't intimidate me as it did 6 months ago but I realized how similiar it was to Picture publisher only a great deal more powerful.I've tried all the suggestions mentioned, but Picture Publisher still shows the edges, so working my way through Adobe Photshop which I now understand is the industry standard. Sandy mentioned I should be using Dreamweaver, but it's such a different environment to FPage, (no lights gone on yet) Hopefully this will happen soon, the DW manual takes you through the steps of setting up a mock web for the coffee shop, but I'd rather a step 1, step 2 type of direction as in Fpage. Thanks for the rave time, back to Adobe, and I'm delighted it's so similiar to Picture Publisher, and I haven't wasted time learning it.

Have fun with it. Don't hesitate to ask questions regarding either photoshop or DW. I (along with others) use both DW and Frontpage and several of us are very good with photoshop so we're here to help you out.

Wouldn't it be great if you had a little socket in the back of your head to download new program information instantly instead of muddling through a manual. I saw on a Discovery program a professor in England is going to do it soon even though the risks are high, pretty amazing. Plug me in Scotty! Ha! If you can't laugh at yourself you might be missing the joke of a lifetime!

Thank you, the funny thing is now that I'm playing with photoshop, I'm quite comfortable with it and don't think it will be as daunting as it looked the first time I opened it up! But DW...for some reason I find the interface confusing and just can't grasp the concept. I should finish the scaal demo setup but I've been spoiled by Fpage... New web...no worries, click here and off you go!
